Thinking about going from a q6600 to a 9450 for the quad system in my sig. Used for 3dsMAX & AutoCAD...

Think it's worth it?

Ya... been there, done that, I just wanted to see if I was nuts to even think about it.

you'll probably have trouble getting much over 3.4 on the Q9450 with 8gb of ddr2 800 ram, esp that 5-5-5-15 2gb stuff. You might get lucky and get 3.5-3.6, so maybe a real-world performance gain of about 15%, but that's a best case scenario. The only way I could see you justifying it would be if you're very concerned about power draw and/or heat.

Depends. Are you willing to sell the Q6600? How often is your PC on? How long are you gonna keep that quad? Do much work with apps supporting SSE4?

If you can get some $ out of the Q6600 you should be able to make up the price difference in power savings (40 watt idle, 70 watt load) over about 2 years. Sooo. You make the call on whether a higher OC and potential power savings is worth the hassle of selling the chip and upfront $ investment.

I am keeping my Q6600. Currently testing 3.6GHz on DFI X48.

I wouldn't even considering upgrading the CPU unless the performance difference was at least 50%. So you'd need about a 4.8-5.0ghz quad-core penryn.

It's worth it in the sense that you get to save a few bucks on your electricity bill...

As for performance gains? Keep the q6600.

Nope I like my Q6600 GO need more of a performance increase than 10-15% energy savings non withstanding.

Yeah I noticed that thing gets hot. (pretty much expected, to be frank) Thanks for the tip I will definitely do that. Right now I am totally lost in the BIOS. I somehow got 3.6GHz stable using brute force the first day. Load Idle Since then I have lowered the vCore, vNB and vFSB significantly.

I would like to thank a fellow forum member, DaSinical1, at this opportunity for lapping my Ultra 120. I am amazed by the result. (both the flatness of the heatsink and CPU temps)

Not worth the cash to me. I still have some headroom left if I would need any more power. The little bit of performance increase and a couple bucks a month on the power bill are not worth the ~$150 difference it would cost to upgrade.

Well, based on my experience so far, they are harder to OC and a lot more money. So far all I can get is 3552 mhz, and thats not even stable yet. My cooler could be holding me back, but they don't run a lot cooler (like I thought it would)

same on you lopri.

veteran ocers dont get lost in confusion, we get lost in the fun!

lol...

a bit of advice, only touch things that you know. If you dont know what it does, dont touch it or at least remember what you touched.

LOL now do you see why i only recomended this board to experienced OCers. Can you imagin a newbies face when he opens the bios on one of these badboys?

i doubt i'll be upgrading to that unless i can resell my Q6600 for at least 80% the price of the Q9450. not worth the time changing chips otherwise.

nope, not worth it. Considering the nightmare it is to get a heatsink tower off a LGA775 socket, 12mb Quads will have to hit $260 or lower for me to be bothered.

Nope.

My Q6700 is gonna have to last me awhile.

I don't like all these low multis on the new quads.

If something with at least 9x comes down to nice n cheap then perhaps.

Otherwise i might actually be waiting till Nehalem, which seems like an impossibly long time from now.
