After doing some research I have come to the conclusion that I may very well not be a gamer anymore when the new consoles release. Considering the backlog of games I already have and the horrific direction game companies are going with their new consoles, I am seriously debating and leaning towards not buying anymore new stuff once the new consoles come out. I was just wondering if anyone else was thinking about this or considering it, so I put up this thread for discussion.

Horrific direction? Oh you mean where Sony designed their console to be friendly to developers and offer them things that were missing from current consoles and all the lovely games they showed off? Yeah totally wrong direction when you have a racing title that is both realistic, fun, highly detailed, and creates an online world that you can interact with in real time, 24/7, with anyone from any region of the world. Yep sounds like nobody cares about gamers anymore to me.

I feel I'm just cresting my prime video game playing days, so I will be jumping on next gen 100%. Most likely XBox, but we'll see how the PS4 compares.
I think game devs in general are running out of ideas though, so this may very well be the last gen I hang on for. We'll see.
I'm not really concerned about the console makers, they're just giving me a livingroom computer to play games, how bad can they screw it up?

This is an easy one to answer in one word. Kinect.

If microsoft forces kinect into everything, the xbox will suck utterly. The only reason to own one would be for Halo. Sony already has many exclusives announced. From Diablo 3, Drive Club, and the new Final Fantasy titles, to exclusive content for Destiny. So far microsoft has only rumors of always on kinect being forced and always online being forced and maybe blocking used games. All these rumors were squashed by Sony for the PS4. They aren't forcing online, aren't forcing motion, and aren't blocking used games.

So I can't fathom how anyone can jump right to the xbox when they have no announcements and you basically know everything there is to know about the PS4 except how the box looks.

How is bringing a game that has already been out for a year to the ps4 something special? D3 already sucks to I dont see how this can be a big selling point for them.

I only got a 360 like 8 months ago, I doubt I'll be going "next gen" any time soon. My main gripe with the current gen is that the vast majority of stuff is FPS or FPS-derived. I HATE first-person shooters.

Plus they hinted that diablo is coming to other consoles.
No hint; for the ps4 it's an absolute.

I can't wait to get a next gen. This one is ancient, hardware too damn old. I'm on a ps4 or 720 like white on rice. I have a 360 right now and have zero loyalty to MS; I'll get whichever floats my boat.

I can easily jump right to the Xbox because I know the games I play will be on both consoles and I know the online platform that is far superior is on the Xbox. Sure Sony can offer something that gives me the same thing with the PS4, but if I will get that or not depends on other features they offer as well. Microsoft has the advantage for most online players because they know PSN is horrible. It is a step above the Wii's internet capabilities. MS just has to not do anything stupid like ban all Madden, COD, and fighting games and they have repeat buyers.

Realistically, I will buy both because even if they cost $500 each and come out on the same day I can afford it without any second guesses.

On the other hand, I think next gen PS4/Xbox720 hardware will be opening a lot of doors for developers to implement a lot of ideas they have had for years, and simply haven't been able to implement on the current gen because the hardware isn't up too it.

Especially in the arena of persistant open worlds, sandbox gameplay, I expect big improvements. Most gamers have gotten a taste for the kind of dynamic experience you get from a well crafted open world game, people that didn't care about RPG's before are getting into them now that they have been spoon-fed the concepts of leveling up and gaining new abilities by games like COD4. I expect a higher percentage of games that add these RPG elements making the games more worthwhile to play. It's always funner when you have a character you are building up.

Agreed, it should kick start them again.
Unrelated to "new ideas", I'm still excited to see if those long rumored COD/BF MMO/persistent world rumors ever come true. Just having the horsepower to attempt such a thing would be pretty sweet, having a 300 player always on battle.

Big lulz @ mentioning "Diablo 3" . Seriously, just stop.

And the last several Final Fantasies have flat out been disappointments, I'll stop short of saying "sucking", but they're going to need to do a complete 180 to be relevant again.

Let's tone down some of the blatant fanboyism.

I won't buy one at launch but whether I get one later or not will depend on how their libraries mature. One 'must have' could make all the difference.

I more or less skipped this generation. I did get a Wii because the wife wanted one otherwise I would have probably skipped it too. There were a few decent games for it, but overall I stuck to PC gaming and retro this gen. I've played PS3 and 360 and just wasn't impressed with pricetag vs the actual games for them. I don't see spending $400+ on hardware for 1 or 2 $60 must haves. ( I know someone will argue this point, but whatever, I sampled enough of the games to know I wasn't going to miss not playing them). You are getting up into PC pricing territory, and the overall game list (for what I like) was pretty limited. That trade off is just...not my cup of tea. And well, I had absolutely no interest in Xbox Live or 99% of the games that were made for it.

I won't say I won't get the next gen, but it remains to be seen, and leaning towards highly unlikely.

You mean "Halo Kinect"? ;)

Anyway, I have a big backlog of games (both console and PC), and an aging PC that is no longer sufficient to enjoy many of the titles I already own, much less new games. If I were to spend on gaming at all, it would have to be on a PC upgrade. A console would have to do something miraculous to get me to buy it in the next year or two.

Why would you not buy any of the next-gen consoles? Do you not like videogames?

I'll probably get the PS4 and I already have a Wii U. I'll most likely skip the '720' since I have a gaming PC.

On another note, the fanboyism in this thread is hilarious

Sony already has many exclusives announced. From Diablo 3, Drive Club, and the new Final Fantasy titles, to exclusive content for Destiny.

I don't even know what Drive Club is, but Diablo 3 and Final Fantasy aren't PS4 exclusive.

Diablo 3 is slated for other next-gen consoles. FFXIII and FFXIII-2 were both on the 360.

I can easily jump right to the Xbox because I know the games I play will be on both consoles and I know the online platform that is far superior is on the Xbox.

How do you even know that? The online platforms will be completely different next gen. PS4 is boasting a bunch of new features like streaming, video/screenshot capture/upload, instantaneous demos, and passing the controller to another player online.

Microsoft has the advantage for most online players because they know PSN is horrible. It is a step above the Wii's internet capabilities

This is so fanboy that it hurts.

I'm waiting until they release a game I'm interested in. And none of that crap Sony showed off in the PS4 announcement did it or me.

And Sony better have unified chat or it's a no go for me.

I'm 50/50 at this point. Over the last 18 months, I have been buying mostly PC games. There will have to be a very compelling reason to go with either console at this point.

I'll most likely be getting a PS4. Thought they did a fantastic announcement this time around. They blew it on the Vita but I do get a sense that they're learning from their mistakes. That could change though. Sony's been known to make last minute gaffes, like they did with the Vita card pricing.

The silence from Microsoft has been deafening. I'm actually surprised they're taking so long to announce the damn thing.

I find I have been buying more PC games lately though. Quality is simply better and they're usually cheaper. $60 is still quite a lot to ask for a game. The downside is the higher hardware costs, and DRM. The latter is not as a big issue as it was five or six years ago thanks to Steam, but as we've seen with SimCity, it's still a problem. Console gaming is still largely a fuss free experience.

Yeah, you aren't a console gamer it sounds like so you arent the customer they are targeting.

they are targeting people who want to play Modern Warfare, Killzone, Halo, and Madden NFL on Xbox Live/PSN... that's the common gamer nowadays you are definitely in the niche-minority rendering your interests/opinions an non-issue for the console gaming industry.

anyways I cant wait for the next gen consoles because Xbox 360/PS3 arent even pushing our TV's as good an image as they can deliver.

So many low res textures, sub-720p rendered games. for example, all the Call of Duty games arent even hi def on Xbox 360 and PS3.

They render at 1024x600 which looks like ass on an HDTV, I personally am really looking forward to 1080p / 60fps Modern Warfare with nice textures wihch is what the next gen should be able to deliver.

i find it funny that people complain about spending $60 on games. i'm sure that people are making much more money now than they were when they were kids, yet $50/$60 for games back when everyone had much less money it was not an issue.
