Anyone else come to this conclusion.

I figured that unless i can double the clock speed of my CPU , generally its not worth it to upgrade. I had a k6-2/400@450 before my current system, tried a bunch of other ones that were in the 700-800mhz range and finally settled on this. And finally by doubling my clock speed it was worth it. Also doubled my ram, and doubled the speed of my cdr drive. Hmm... i guess i really shouldn't upgrade again until i can get a 1.8 ghz athlon with 512mb of ddr ram.

I basically did the same exact thing. Doubled my ram, MORE than doubled my proc speed. Really the only thing that wasnt upgraded was my hard drive

No. I upgraded from a Celeron 400 @ 575 to a Celeron 566 @ 952, & then from that to a P3 700 @ 980. If it's faster, I want it. But generally I'd like to get a 15% or more boost in performance to make it worth my money.

Sounds about right, but two things I like to keep in mind:
1. They're usually next gen chips, so it's more then just higher clock speed, but on the other hand..
2. The performance increase isn't consistent with clock speeds (diminishing returns).
I guess for us with limited budget it just feels justified when we "double" in speed. :)

Let's see...
8088 -> 486/66 -> P133 -> AMD 350 (maybe 333, I forget) -> PIII-700
640k -> 8MB -> 32MB -> 64MB -> 128MB
NO HD -> 260MB -> lots of different HDs -> 4GB -> 15GB

My upgrade path:

Commodore 64/128 64K/128K ram -> IBM 486SX25 4megs RAM-> IBM Aptiva P200 64megs-> Homebuilt Celeron 333 128megs -> Homebuilt Athlon 550 256megs

My next upgrade will just be a cpu upgrade in the 900-1Ghz range. Haven't decided yet.

Sometimes the best two upgrades are Ram and a faster hard drive.

gateway 386dx, genericp200 w/ 64MB ram and 4.3GB hd, celeron366@550 w/ 128MB ram and 13GB hd, duron600@1000 w/ 256MB ram and 30GB hd

doubling in speed and ram and hd seems about right to me!

Lets see, gateway P100/16mg ram/2 gig HDD bought an Overdrive 200 and 16 more mg Ram.. Then I bought a 550@630 katmai/128MG/ two 13.6G HDD. (coppermines came out a week later) Gave the Gateway to the sister-in-law, bought the wife a Celly 466/128MG/10G HDD. Then I bought a 700@933 to replace my 550 (which I put in the wifes to replace the 466) Then I got some Mushkin 133 to replace my corsair 100 (which I put in the wifes) then I bought a GTS 2 to replace my TNT2 Ultra which is setting on my shelf. :)

I had my 550 Katmai 9 months before I bought my 700, did I need a 700, nope, did I want one, heck yeah. :D

My upgrades have usually been driven by the needs of programs I run, which typically translates to games. Let me see if I can remember my upgrade path, dredging up some deep memories here:
8088--> 386-33MHz--> 486DX2-80 (first AMD chip for me!)--> P120--> P166MMX--> K6-266--> K6-2 350--> Celeron 366@550--> PIII-700@933 (but now I have two systems, the other is a CelII 533@800, and I'm about to see how far my Duron 700 will overclock to).

When I think about how much money I have spent, it's somewhat sickening. :eek: At least everything after the 386 were built by me so I migrated the components.

When I was a student and visa was funding my upgrades I was upgradnig all the time...now that I know of the importance of my money I do more important upgrades. I still have a V3 I bought in April of '99, and dual celery 533's from a year ago. I won't bother upgrading again until next spring and I'll get a 1 gig+ CPU and some other stuff...an upgraded computer doesn't make my life much better, something I didn't realize before :) Like really what are people doing with 1.1 gig CPUs other than bragging rights? Your games aren't gonna be better over an 800, so you can crunch more RC5 blocks - is that worth spending money on?

I upgraded from a Celery @ 875 to a Duron @ 850.
Still 256mb ram, but now I got 2 Quantum KA's in raid :)
