The wheels effectively put zero force on the plane (they spin and don't move the plane backwards, no matter how fast the belt moves). Thus, there is nothing counteracting the thrust of the engines. Thus, the plane moves forward (no matter how fast the belt moves). As the plane moves forward (since the belt does nothing to the plane), it gets fast enough to launch. When it moves as it's takeoff speed, it takes off.

Why? Because the belt doesn't affect the plane at all.

Can I nominate myself for pwnage of the year?

But if you assume a non-zero moment of inertia on the wheels and the treadmill's ability to always accelerate regardless of the velocity, you can prevent the plane from taking off.

I'd still enjoy watching the show just to see how they handle performing the test ... IMO its going to be very difficult to do it right.

And to make it simple, the only deciding factor of wether the plane takes off or not has to do with air passing over the wing quickly enough to create lift.

They'll make two shitty-ass models.. Then the red head will look hot.. Then one model will crash and burn. The other will start coming apart. The read head will smile and look cute. Then, they'll use the one that's coming apart. It won't take off on the treadmill or off the treadmill. Then, they'll conclude decisively that the myth is either busted or plausible.

You're kidding, right? Seriously. You're joking... aren't you? Jesus America is stupid and it's a sad commentary on our stupidity when a show takes on something that is a matter of physics as a
"myth". There is nothing myth-like about it.

Hopefully Mythbusters will also explore the myth about 'gravity' next.
They did one with a truck full of pigeons, wherein the pigeons would all take off - would the truck's weight change?
Well let's see, the mass doesn't change, so no, the weight wouldn't change.

If you understood a simple free-body diagram, you would realize the plane actually does take off. The force the engines exert is in a completely different direction than the force exerted by the weight of the plane and the treadmill. Actually, I don't even know why I'm wasting my time.
The problem is that people think that the treadmill will exert a force upon the plane which counters the engines. I believe that, for this problem, the wheels are assumed to have frictionless bearings.
In that case, none of the treadmill's momentum is transferred into the plane. That's what people just don't see.

I think the "myth" only says that the treadmill matches the velocity of the engines or the wheels, or something like that. Sure, if it could accelerate to infinite velocity.....well, the wheels would disintegrate and quite possibly rip the wings to pieces. No, the plane wouldn't take off. :p

Even so, to build up enough rotational inertia, the treadmill would have to be moving pretty damn fast.

Ah, so you've seen the show before. :D

I'm worried that they'll use a crappy model that has really high friction on the wheels, which will prevent it from moving forward freely.

Either way, busted or plausible, this won't put it to bed.

I do too. What's unfortunate that people are more willing to believe the pseudo-science on Mythbusters but won't believe the valid scientific explanations that have been given many, many times in the past. But if Mythbusters is what it takes to put this topic to rest, I welcome our new mybusting overlords and remind them that as a trusted forum member I can be useful for rounding up other people to toil in their underground salt mines.

The pseudo-science craze is shocking. Global warming is a prime example - climatologists (ie - people who spend their life understanding the climate) all agree the planet is warming up. There is a debate about whether humans are a primary or secondary cause, but they all agree that we should reduce our portion of it. Yet, people don't believe this information. Instead they latch onto pseudo-scientific ideas, bullshit hypothesis, and idiots who tell them what they want to hear.

Evolution is another great example. All in all, the stupidity of America is stunning.

I  Mythbusters.

I could care less if they don't test this perfectly, I'm sure it'll be entertaining.

Now are we saying it matches the forward linear velocity of the plane or that the angular velocity of the wheel on the plane matches the angular velocity of the wheel in the treadmill (assuming equal radius wheels).

... or should I stop feeding the flames? :p

LOL but should be fun to watch.

be better if kari is naked...testing if a dildo bends ro somethign..yeah...

As long as the plane and/or the treadmill blow up. I'm cool with whatever the results are.

LOL. I thought everybody had got off than bandwagon already after it was repeatedly and thoroughly debunked. I guess it's a matter of perspective though.......I mean if you live in a constricted world of blogs and news sources that only post what you want to believe, then you're not going to know that the world has moved on.

Ah well. This Summer was cooler than last Summer, so I suppose we're headed into another Ice Age now. :(

Plane -shmane. Forget about the plane.

Will Kari get to join the mile-high club and will we get to watch? That's the true question. :D

Christ, I was just giving an example of what feels like a trend. Sorry if my example was off a bit, but I still think the general theme rings true.

minus the part where the car's power is going TO the wheels, where a plane's power (engine thrust) is completely independent of the wheel/ground interaction.

not to mention my brother is an aerospace engineer with an MS focusing on hypersonics. i believe he knows more than 99.99999999999999999% of AT when it comes to aircraft, and says the plane takes off.

vouch about plane taking off. However, you don't know any math, since 99.99999999999999999% of AT is less than one person! Are you saying NOBODY on atot knows more bout it than your bro?

are you suggesting toy cars migrate?
