Anyone else afraid to buy a 8800GTX?

I was ready to buy one but I keep seeing threads with people having problems. Is anyone using the 8800GTX and NOT having any problems? What brand? If you're having problems, what are they and what brand do you have? Did you go from ATI to NVIDIA and did you do a Clean install if you did?

I'm not "afraid" to buy one, just can't right now. It looks like time is on my side though since by the time I have money there will probably be less problems with them.

I haven't been reading about all these problems. People seem very happy with their purchase. I think minor driver issues are to be expected with new tech and will soon be settled.

The only thing that would discourage me at this point is price. Quality/performance wise, no problem.

I have one, it works flawlessly, and I dont even have proper 64 bit drivers yet.

I got 9k in 3dmark 2006 compared to 5200 with my 7900gto.

Do you have the GTX or GTS? What brand did you buy?
I'm thinking about buying the BFG.

Despite the fact that I really don't need one because my X1900XTX isn't giving me a bit of trouble, the only thing I'm afraid of regarding the 8800GTX is what my wife would do to me if she found out I spent $600+ on it!!!

For gods sake I have to sleep in the same room with her! ;) :p

I just got my Evga 8800GTX installed today. I am in love with this card.

I cant find much wrong with it. I havent really had any driver problems even. If I had a complaint it'd be that the temps arent what my old Geforce7s used to be?

Thats the worst I can come up with. Probably not what you wanted to hear considering these cards are $500/$650.

The Geforce7 cool operation was pretty neat compared to the X1Ks and now the G80s.
But overall I'll take the IQ improvements and performance enhancements.

The GTS is a great choice.

The only reason I didnt go that route is because if I'm spending $500 already.. its tough for me to not toss in a measly $150 more and get the "l33t version". :p
Unless theres a large price difference, I get suckered into the high end every time.

Theres not much to be afraid of.
The only thing I can say for sure is to buy a BFG or Evga for the warranty and service they offer if you ever need the card replaced.
When your spending $500+ its foolish not to.

Yeah I've got a huge problem.
I'm afraid to get my 8800GTX right now because eVGA wants $400 for the 8800GTX step-up and with BF is around the corner I ain't going to shell out that much of cash for the new g/c.:(

I'm afraid i just can't really afford one right now, especially as i just spent more money on a new 500 GB HDD to add to my flock.

Did yours come with the Dark Messiah game? That game is awesome!! Much better than Oblivion.

I'm not getting one because my 6800GT is more than enough to play WoW. Also my motherboard is AGP so I'd need more than just an 8800 to upgrade.

Also I'd much rather buy a Nintendo Wii and a few games than a $500 video card and no games :)

I'm very happy with my 8800GTX. There are some problems in 1-2 games but overall I didn't experience any issue with it. (knocks wood)
The only problem I experienced was when I removed my X1900XTX and posted with 8800GTX.. I had the drivers removed and in safe mode be cleaned with driver cleaner. When I first booted with 8800GTX I couldn't completely load Windows it would freeze no matter what after entering the welcome screen. I did a reset in the bios and after that time no issues whatsoever.. Be sure to reset CMOS before you put the 8800GTX in your system

Amen to that. I am facing that issue now (upgraded from x1900xtx to 8800gtx). I figure what wifey doesn't know won;t hurt her, and my substantial gains from the sale of my stock in Apple more than justify the reward.

I could get one now, only thing stopping me besides the fact that it will cut into my savings (I'm a student lol :p) is that i don't really play games enough to justify one and the games i do play my 7800gt handles well. Prolly will upgrade next gen, unless this 7800gt dies still got 1year warranty left on this card :) (the card itself is a replacement for old 6800ultra which died a year ago).

The 8800GTX itself is a thing of beauty. The drivers are another story, though. Shouldn't be long before Nvidia releases another driver for it. Kind of surprises me because Nvidia drivers are usually top notch.

You shouldn't be and I'm afraid we ain't seen nothing yet!
Wait unitil DX-10 and games that support it to be released.
It'll take months to weed out most of the major game/driver bugs.

Seriously, I hope a driver update comes soon and comes often. I still can't play Splinter Cell Double Agent.

Question... how the hell did you fit the GTX in your SuperLanboy?

Reasons for not jumping on the bandwagon and perhaps wait for 2nd Gen cards:

1) Hot idle temps.
2) Above could be solved by LOUD dustbuster fan on full all the time.
3) I don't play anything above 1280x1024, so until I get a 24" LCD with 1920x1200, why bother.
4) PSU requirements. I have yet to see anyone using anything something like a 520W Powerstream to see if it can handle the power draw.

Very carefully.

I've put it and and out twice already.

Thor- My PSU is a 550watter from 2 years ago. Bought it for my GF6GT SLI. My rig is rock solid. I'm not ready for GTX SLI, but I've spent enough cash till I buy the G81.

I run 16xQAA/16xAF, HQ, supersampling transAA on all games. Its smooth as butter and the IQ is amazing.
