I guess it varies by person, but I have a busy life, out of town 3-4 days a week working 40 hours a week, and then work 20-30 hours a week when I get home on a side business, plus trying to code/work on websites in any other spare time + help my wife keep the house in order since she is almost as busy as me.

I tend to go in bursts, where I eat very healthy, and workout regularly, and get in shape, and then after 4-6 months I slide back into picking up fast food, and sleeping an extra hour instead of working out.

I'm 6'2 and when I am down to 185-190 lbs I have a 6 pack and am at ideal weight imo.

I tend to fluxuate, where I get up to 220ish lbs and then workout and get back down to the 190 range. Hence the yo yo comment. This latest swing has been my worst ever, gotten up to 240 lbs since I got off of my regular eating/workout schedule. I was 195 back in January.

Anyone else have this problem, and if so how did you finally stick to one thing?

I'm not a yo-yo, but I do catch myself trying to slide frequently. You just have to remind yourself how much work it takes to get back to where you want to be, and ask yourself whether what you're getting at this drive-thru is worth it or not. Sometimes you'll do it anyway, but every cheeseburger you talk yourself out of is one less you have to work off.

Might want to edit your thread title a bit: I had no idea this thread was about cyclic weight loss/gain.

That said; I'm right there with you, but not to the extremes you have.

I think most "full grown adults" i.e. over 30 and your body has settled into it's comfort zone, have a typical weight. A weight that your body likes being.

In your case, a 60 pound fluctuation is not normal at ALL. Not even close! You have some kind of chemical thing going on inside you, man. 60 pounds is a LOT of weight to gain/lose just like that.

I can't imagine someone who is 6'2" weighing 190. I am 6'1" and am currently at 213. I have been 195 and I was a stick. For me, that 195lbs was maintained thru working out 6 days a week and eating fish and salad for most meals. Not exactly a great palette, and pretty an unrealistic weight to try and maintain. Impossible for me.

My goal is 205. Unfortunately, my body's comfort zone is somewhere in the 210 range; as long as I exercise 3-4 days a week, i can eat/drink everything I want and stay very close to 210.

You're not alone. :)

Lots of people yo-yo. It is very common. Note: studies have shown that it is healthier to stay overweight than to yo-yo. So, you should really try not to yo-yo.

Diets are easy initially. They almost all work initially. They are quite difficult to stay on. And even if you stay on them, they often don't work in the long run. Instead, you don't need a diet. You need a lifestyle change. You need a permanent change to the way you approach life.

Don't go all out on a fad diet that you can't keep. Don't skip all deserts, because when your birthday comes around, you know you'll get off the diet. And once people step off, they step WAY off the diet. They pig out on all the stuff they gave up. Then they never come back onto the diet again.

Instead, make simple lifestyle changes that you CAN keep forever. Replace SOME bad foods with good foods. Don't give up your favorite things - instead just eat half as much of it. They'll be that much more special to you. Add some fiber, use smaller plates, spoil your appetite before dinner, etc. Do these simple things that you can keep with forever. No, the weight won't fall off, but you'll gradually go down to a level where you can keep it off for good. Don't go out exercising 1 hour a day in the morning - you'll eventually tire of it and sleep in. Exercise 10 minutes a day in the evening instead.

:Q When you can fit thru the 6" wide safety bars around the pool, even a little belly would look huge! You are a toothpick, Sir.

Good to know Im not alone :) My settling point used to be 210, but without pigging out, Ive been gravitating upwards with standard food intake. I used to be able to eat like a horse, but now I think my metabolism has slowed wayyy down.

I think the main thing I miss when I start gaining weigh is regular cardio... don't get me wrong, I am active 2-3 days a week ,lifting things, building things, cleaning/feeding animals. So Im not missing activity, just cardio I guess?

I am back on the diet/exercise wagon, and I am overdoing it again. Once I get closer to the weight I want to be I will try to make an effort of merging reality with unrealistic goals.

Time to cook up some more skinless chicken breasts with chili powder, and make some lemon chili fish :)

exactly, the difference is in ordering a grilled chicken sandwich instead of a bacon cheeseburger when you go out. same with exercise, workout a solid 20-30 minutes an evening for the next 3 years instead of a hour in the morning for 2 months. Exercise/diet like everything else should be done in moderation otherwise you wont stick to it.
