Anyone deciding between an X1800XL and 7800GT?

I selected the XFX 7800GT because it is the #1 7800GT at newegg when you sort by Best Rating, and the price is only $10 off the Radeon. This retail version includes three games: Farcry, X2, and MotoGP2.

The Sapphire is a no-frills OEM card.

I'm waiting for OC results on the XL, driver updates to see what kind of real performance can be wrung from the XL, slight price drop, and a larger LCD to utilize the card (12x10 is not worthy). I'd say it'll all shake out nicely for a little X-mas present for myself that wifey won't know about.

Edit: also looking for some real indepth IQ comparisons from a few websites.

Looking to buy within the next month or so.

The XL is about $45 more than the eVGA 7800GT bundled with BF2. That BF2 bundle is very attractive to me.

I have the x1800xl overclocked to 575 core and 550 mem. This is currently the maximum that CCC will allow. After new tools are released, I am sure I will hit xt speeds on the core, and real close on the mem(mem is rated at 1400 on the xl and 1500 on the xt). The overclocks on the XT look even better and it has 512MB for only like $100 more. With my A64@ 2.5GHz i score 7850 3d marks05, just for a quick reference.
The x1000 series has a whole new bus technology(ring bus) and I think there is also room for driver improvements.
The 7800gt is a great card as well, so I dont think you can really go wrong with either card. I prefer the image quality of ATI, but to each his own. IF the price is a major factor, the 7800 with BF2 cant be beat for now.

a lot of people with 7800 GT's can get their cores to 500 or more and 1200 or more on the mem. With the gpu at 500 or more and the mem at 1200 or more, you can expect scores of around 8300+ in 05.

my 7800 GT can only get to 465/1200 =[ and i scored 7750 with a venice 3200 at 2.55ghz. I have 4x512mb ram so im forced to run at 2T. If i had 2x512mb running at 1T, my score would probably go up by about 100 points.

AFAIK, the 7800 GT is a little cheaper than the X1800XL and @ stock, performs a little better overall.

i would go with the 7800 GT.

Not really earth-shattering. I can almost touch 8K with my 7800GT clocked up a bit.

AFAIC, the price premium the X1800XL holds over the 7800GT makes it a terrible value and one I'd not recommend.

My suggestion would be to wait to see what prices are and what kind of new driver updates occur between now and then. If you were buying now it would come down to what you want, if you want absolute best performance for your buck then 7800GT it is but if you want the extra features and you don't mind the slight price premium then X1800XL it is. This probably won't change much in the next month but the price premium may be slightly lower and performance may be a little better.

As for buying this week, the GT performs better AND costs less. Don't see what there is to sort out on this one, unless someone has more specific priorities than those to have addressed. As to future prices, future drivers, etc, I'd evaluate those once said future arrives. In my opinion folks have already done plenty of waiting on ATI's behalf, but if they'd like to wait some more for something that may or may not come, more power to them.

i would go with the 7800 GT.

And when the overclock cap is removed I expect to hit over 625 on the core and 1400 on the mem. Thats xt speeds. I expect to hit well over 8300 in 05. On xtremesystems sampsa hit 705 and 1410 on the XL with 9175 in 05(using the cooler from the XT)on the XL, but I agree that at stock the 7800GT is probably a better value, but once you start overclocking, and take image quality into consideration, I think the x1800xl is a more than worthy option.
I am not trying to sway anyone either way. Both are great cards and will not dissapoint during gaming.

I almost bought a 7800GT 3 days back.

I was waiting out for the detailed reviews on X1800's features and IQ but there isnt even one article on that yet.

Still holding out.

Waiting toooooo long. I simply jumped on teh 7800GT on the first day... The longer you wait, the closer you get to the next gen. Jump on now and don't regret it. I gambled right, and I guess my 7800GT wins for now, but who knows what will happen next?

Yes and look at the hot deals with the BFG 7800GT. I got it for $334, and now we see deals for like $319? How can you not jump on. ATI's never going to get supply out that fast and in that big bulk that you wil see awesome dell deals like that.

I'm not @ 16x12. When I pickup 16x12 or greater (around X-mas or a deal I just cannot pass up) I'll be after a new card. X800XT right now, so I'm in no hurry. If I was @ 16x12, I would have picked up a GT/GTX long ago

I was comparing the 6800 ULTRA SLI bench marks to the x850 xt Crossfire, they are very comparable. But I can't find a decent sellection of crossfire motherboards at all. Crossfire looks like a good option eventualy but i dont think the options are good enough just yet.

Personally, I'd take a 7800gt over an x1800xl due to price and the extra pipes, which might come in handy for next gen games (considering they'll use the pipes more). Or so i've heard.

either way, they're both good cards.
