Something my father got me into for a short time as a kid was writing to the tourism / chamber of commerce boards of various countries and asking for them to send me maps. Now of course I would get lots and lots of tourist pamphlets and other stuff, some of which was actually interesting in its own right but much of which was junk, but it was the maps that I was primarily interested in. It's a cool and cheap way to collect maps of various countries if you happen to have an interest in this kind of thing. It's also somewhat unreliable as you sometimes just get the pamphlets and nothing in the way of a map. I'm sure people are thinking why bother with the advent of Google maps and the like. But there's just something special about holding a detailed fold out map as opposed to a digital copy. If you don't get it, you won't which is fine.
I think like most kids, and adults too, I had/have a fascination with the smallest of countries. There's just something about these small little kingdoms that spark the imagination. I don't even know where most of the maps I got are anymore but here's a pic of the coolest thing I got. This is a map of Nepal (well obviously, and I know Nepal isn't all THAT small) and it's printed on low quality paper and has the look and feel of those "cloth/paper" maps you might find in the collectors edition of some MMORPG world or something:
Course the majority of the maps I got were nowhere near this cool. Most were of the typical tourist type you'd expect. I do remember having a few other nice ones though. There was a very large map of Andorra that I got which is neat if you know just how small Andorra is.
I'm thinking of taking this up again. Some of the small countries in Africa would be particularly interesting to do this with.
