I'm wondering if anyone has tried changing the 3D Fanspeed setting in their 7800GT BIOS via NiBiTor BIOS editor, perhaps while modding the 3D voltage settings. I noticed that it is only set at 43% for 3D.

Did it work?
Not work?
Fry something? :Q

I have an XFX 7800GT

Use rivatuner instead. That way you can change it anytime you want from windows.

Thanks, that's a good idea. It's just that I am editing the BIOS anyway to bump up the 3D voltage and noticed the field was available to edit.
So, I was curious about anyone's experience with it.

I don't think the BIOS voltage change actually works on these cards. That's why everyone is doing the hardware volt mod.

I've found a couple of reasonable sounding posts illustrating the mod and claiming results. I haven't flashed mine yet, so I don't have any personal data.

In case you are interested in reading them, here are the 2 I've found most interesting. You have to read to the bottom of both tutorials to see the update regarding NiBiTor 2.8

There is also this post with a 1.5V modified BIOS attached.

I don't plan on using it because when I looked at it, it didn't have the correct default values for the clocks for my XFX card (which is slightly overclocked from the factory). I also feel more comfortable extracting the bios straight off my card using nvflash or NiBiTor and modifying that. That way I know which parts have been twiddled with. Not that the whole process is very "comfortable", the thought of maybe having a (formerly expensive) video card that only displays a blank screen is not exactly a comforting thought.

Here is an update with my results.

-It is possible to get 1.5V core by modifying the BIOS of the 7800GT, it worked for me.
I went from a max 473MHz stable GPU core to 495MHz stable, no artifacts, by doing this. I've overclocked my card for a while with the original bios, and I know for sure that 473 was the max artifact-free clockspeed before the bios mod.

-It was relatively easy to do using NiBiTor from www.mvktech.net and nvflash and following the steps in the forum threads I posted links to above.
- It was no harder than flashing a motherboard bios, in fact, nvflash has a lot of options that made it more comfortable than flashing my motherboard. I was able to extract and save the original 7800GT bios and then compare the saved bios to the on-card bios using nvflash, so I was confidant I had a good backup.

-No temperature problem, I do not see any increase in temp, but I cleaned the dust out of my cooler just prior to modding the bios, so it is running cooler than before and is not a fair test. Max temp I have gotten is 59C, running a simple OpenGL benchmark called Open-GL Stars. When playing DoD Source, it never gets above 48C.
-I am using an Arctic Cooling NV Silencer 5 R3 which, in my opinion, is a fabulous cooler. Utterly Silent and very effective, exhausting the hot air out the back of the case. http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga1.php
