Someone I worked with tried to ship some CD's they sold on Ebay via 'media mail' at the US Post Office. The clerk asked them what was in the box and the person told them that it was data cds, some packing material, and a copy of the PayPal invoice.

The clerk at the Post Office told them that it didn't qualify for media because of the inclusion of the invoice.

WTF.

Go back there and tell them you took the invoice out.

EDIT: Although this could be considered mail fraud, which is a federal offense.

Ha! of course you can put paper in there, it's "media". Retail operations use MM all the time.

The clerk didn't know the rules. Not the first time...

Okay, if I write a letter on paper...is that media mail?

I've been told that you can't include a card or letter in a media mail box (though I *think* they said I could if I paid the letter rate on top of it, like an extra .37 stamp, though it was so long ago that I may be wrong on that.)

They must be cracking down. Yesterday at the P.O. I tried to ship a textbook via Media Mail and the clerk asked me several times if there was anything else in the package.

There's a certain eBay seller that sends all video game accessories through Media Mail, and it takes 3-4 weeks to get the packages

I use to work for the post office. You gotta watch out for media mail though. Under the new rules, USPS can open ANY package sent with media mail for inspection. If you look around for signs at the post office, they will tell you about this. If you send anything that doesn't apply to media mail, you can be fined and trust me I HAVE seen people get fined hefty amounts.

the clerk is wrong.

from the USPS's domestic mail manual, Section 1.2 of E713:

"any printed matter that is mailable as Standard Mail may be included loose with any qualifying material mailed at the Media Mail rates."

Hm...Whats the advantage to media mail?

Media mail is sort of a discount for shipping supposely educational type of things like books, music sheets, CDs, etc.

Sometimes when you mail heavy things like books, the savings is pretty significant. Only problem is that it ships REALLY slow but it eventually gets there.

Half.com users I can't emphasize ENOUGH on the use of delivery confirmation.

Here is a link to media mail on their website:

Media Mail

they had a fit one day when I shipped a book and told them there was an invoice in there.

Now I just fold it up and put it inside the book.

This is an area where the USPS needs to do some internal training. On at least a couple of occassions I've had postal clerks act like they were doing me a favor to let me send computer media as media mail. The definitions are not hard to figure out!

If they have misgivings about offering a media rate they should just redefine it at corporate level, and stop jerking me around. In my opinion though, they'll just be shooting themselves in the foot to discourage this.

And to add my two cents about the advantages of media rate, the savings are more than half most of the time I use it. It's true that sometimes a parcel will take 6-8 days, but often I've found they arrive in about the same time as other classes. Not to mention that I've also paid priority rate on packages and seen them take 7-8 days to travel from here (TN) to New England more than once.

In short, from time to time I'm gonna be dissappointed by the USPS, and I'd rather be dissappointed at a bargain rate 🙂

that clerk sounds like a real idiot. i would demand to speak to a supervisor. and next time, just say that it has media in it. that's all. "invoice" may be too much info.

(now i am a golden member. kbye.) 😉

I had a clerk tell me I can't do delivery confirmation on 1st Class, when I know it to be true.

Mediamail is cheap. That's about the only good thing to be said for it.
