Anyone been to the hospital/ER for just an IV pack (perhaps for dehydration or something similar)? How much do they cost?

I'm going to guess at least $500 since it would be considered an emergency visit. If you're just getting one for the hell of it we will keep you waiting for hours since you'd be wasting our time and resources.

The packs are like $50-or-so per case, online. I'd hope hospitals get a bulk discount. I'd expect the billed amount for an ER visit to still be several hundred dollars.

This happened to me once. I ate some BAAAD chicken at TGIFridays and ended up in urgent care for 2 large bags of IV fluids.

yeah standard saline is just salt water balanced for the body

Itemized on a bill, it's probably like $75 per pack (or something a few orders of magnitude more expensive than cost), but that number would likely include the nurse/tech administering it too.

A bag of saline costs the hospital $9 (at least, thats what we pay for it). The total cost for an er visit for straight up dehydration with a couple liters of IV fluid is probably around a couple thousand.

I think Slew has it right. I wouldn't be surprised if the base cost for a pack is about 10. It's just salt water. But a visit to the ER for some IV packs will cost 500-1k without insurance, depending on region and other factors.

I went to the hospital for severe dehydration once. I was so sick that I threw up and tore my stomach/esophagus a bit (I think it's called a Mallory-Weiss tear). I had a ton of IV fluid, plus they ran a scope down my throat.

It was $20.

Few thousand? Yikes. If I recall correctly, the bill from the ED I used to work in would probably run.. hmm.. 600 maybe? For multiple liters and the doc visit.
