So I'm thinking of finally heading to the Hamptons to see what the big deal is. However, I don't know much of anything about the place. Does anyone have any first-hand experience as to where to go (Montauk? Southampton?), what to see, etc.?
Anyone been to the Hamptons out on Long Island, NY?

I have a good friend who lives out in the Hamptons. He's not rich though, just one of the regular townsfolk. I lived in Suffolk County, Long Island, and I regret never having gone out to the Hamptons.
From what I saw on the Hamptons TV show last year, though, you should bring lots of money if you plan on having fun. Either that, or be ridiculously well connected.

I am also from Suffolk County NY, and I've never been out there. If you do go, bring cash. Lots of cash. Nothing here is cheap, and out there I am sure its worse. By the way, if you get treated like crap, we aren't all like that. 
I've noticed when I go to nicer places on the Island I get treated like crap cause I am not "well funded" (rich ).

My uncle has a nice place out there, I've been there a few times. Contrary to what you may hear, most people are really nice.
A wonderful woman from my church (in her 80s) invited me and the entire youth group to her beach house there.. A lovely, lovely place to live if you're rich.. i wouldn't want to visit.. Really not much to do.. She took us out to get some pizza (6 people in all) and the bill was rather pricey - $40 or so..It's very expensive and the people are pretty snooty there.. We (mostly asian and hispanic) kept getting looks for not belonging and it bugged my pal a lot.. I'm desensitized to snootiness but it may bother you..
Well I'm basically just a guy who lives out on Long Island (Nassau), who's curious what all the hoopla is about the place. I don't plan on ever necessarily knowing someone who'll own a beach house, but I was always under the impression that I could still check out a beach, maybe see some stores where I can't afford anything, and just kinda walk around the darn place.
There's this sorta colony of some of my dad's family over there. Nice place. Visit the garden shop "Marder's" (believe me, it's not just a little ghetto garden shop). Good place.

Been there, done that numerous times. Actually, I went gambling on this cruise boat leaving Freeport yesterday. I ended up breaking even.
my sister bf lives in the south hamptons. He purchased a new 2 floor condo in a golf resort or something like that brand new. I've hung out with him a few times, weird fellow, likes to order out alot and drive around. Its a fun close relaxing place. Nothing else is like it. Reminds me of my old county where everyone knows each other and gets along very well. I spent the day in one of his friends backyard swimming pool and slept in a cabin deep in woods.. scary.. All in all..awsome place.. the killer part... 6 hour drive to and fro... worth it I guess and did I mention the women are spectacular
I'm in Suffolk and have been to the Hamptons many times.
Keep in mind that "The Hamptons" is not a specific town or village, it's several towns along the south shore probably from Westhampton all the way to Amagansett. Consequently you can't just walk around town.
If you are going to drive, try to not go on a Friday, the traffic is usually brutal.
The area has too many 'beautiful people' for my tastes and I much prefer Montauk - espescially the fishing!
The ferry from Sag Harbor to Shelter Island is also nice.
If you tell me what you really want to do, I could probably make some more suggestions.
Hey. Well this is going to be a family trip (My parents, myself and sister), so a lot of the nightlife stuff that I'd personally do won't really apply in this case. I'd likely go during the week, to avoid a lot of the traffic as well. I want to visit at least one beach, perhaps walk around (tho' you say that's not really possible?) and shop a bit. My parents aren't the most adventerous of people, so that eliminates a lot of stuff as well. Something like that ferry tho' sounds like a good idea.
You'd be better off shopping in Manhattan--same stores, Tiffany's, Coach, etc etc.
Otherwise, the beaches aren't that great, there are no hotels to speak of, and there's not much to do unless you rent a house.
I lived in the hamptons for a while, then commuted to work in east hampton later on. The worst thing about the hamptons is getting there. 27 moves slow as molasses on the weekends and almost everyday in the summer. Aside from that, there's some nice vacation like places to go (south hampton is a nice little town) and there are frequently fun events happening in the summer.
Well I'm not sure if I'll drive or take the LIRR. THe main reason I'm even considering driving is cuz I'd go during the week. Is the drive still pretty bad on a Tuesday or Wednesday during the summer?
I've only been there in the winter but I heard its the hot spot if you are young and want to party.
I stayed over at my ex-boss's boss's place. He must have had 100 acres in Southhampton.

I am not a fan, and I have spent a fair amount of time in the Hamptons. It is basically a very wealthy suburb, overrun with Range Rovers and S-class Mercedes. I imagine it would be fun if you could wangle invites to the big parties out there (P Diddy, et al), but otherwise it is very snobby and there is not a whole lot going on. My father lives on the North Fork of LI (the Hamptons are on the South Fork), and IMO it is a lot nicer. There are a lot of vineyards and nice beaches there, without the annoyingly fancy-pants Hamptons vibe.
