Anyone been to Grand Negril, Jamaica?

Just wondering if anyone has any general impressions.

I've been invited to a destination wedding in late April of 2011 and I'm trying to decide if I should go or not.

If you are an American, and look the part, don't take untrusted taxis. If you are going on holiday - cruise or otherwise, stick to the touristy stuff. Don't try to get off the beaten path. Lots of crime happens in all parts of the Carribean, but Jamaica is well known for it.

i have about 3 groups of friends who went to jamaica and all of them said they will not go back there.

there are just much better places to go in the carribean that are much safer too.

that said, if it was a desintation wedding of a good friend, i would definitely go.

i've heard as long as you stay in your resort area then you are more than safe. but on vacations i like to venture off which is a reason i have no desire to go to jamaica.

for a wedding, you'll probably be staying on the resort grounds most of the time. From what I've heard, the resorts and touristy areas are nice, but it can get a bit iffy once you venture out. I say go to your friend's wedding and have fun

I've been to Jamaica (Hedonism II).

The first night, walking the beach, the security guard introduced himself... and asked if I'd like him to get me *anything*.

He'd be happy to have a young woman waiting at my room... drugs...

I took a bus to Rick's Cafe across town, and the poverty is overwhelming.

They protect the resorts well. Sadly, the city seems unsafe. (15+ years ago though).

It took until the first night for someone to ask? WTF? 2 minutes out of customs and we where bombarded by people asking if we wanted some weed...

so, did you opt for anything? ()🙂
and how's the scenery in Hedonism?

My wife has traveled extensively throughout the world, and by far, the worst place she says she's ever been and would never go back to was Jamaica. She said it was filthy and the panhandlers and beggers were like nothing she's ever seen; they put their wares on you - clothes, jewelry, etc - without your permission then demand payment.

She did not stay in a resort, so if you're in a resort your experience may be different.

If it's on a resort, go for it. I took a vacation in Jamaica (Ochos Rios area) this past year and it was great. Absolutely beautiful country with awesome beaches. Crime, however, is a pretty serious problem. If you stay inside of the resort you should have no problems though.

Is Jamaica that bad? I saw Anthony Bourdain walking around Kingston enjoying awesome local street foods.

Granted he was staying on busy main streets.. I'm sure you can get away doing that safely and enjoy the 'real' flavor of Jamaica.

I saw that episode too. He and the camera crew probably had a small private security force with them all times... no way any sane white people would walk around one of the most dangerous places on earth with thousands of dollars of camera equipment with no protection.

why the people gotta be white?

have you ever traveled to a poor country? racism is big and you would be targeted just because you are white and "rich". a white dude holding a sign that said "i hate black people" in Compton would be safer than a white dude with expensive cameras walking in the ghetto in Jamaica.

How about a "I hate black people AND take pictures of them!" sign?

jamaica has beautiful beaches and resorts. The staff is very friendly.

I don't get these people that are afraid of the ghettos thats like saying don't visit america because of compton, south bronx, chicago, etc are unsafe.

Sounds just like Senegal.

There ya have it.

I've been to Negril 5 times, walked all over the place, went to some private homes of the hotel staff to eat dinner, and the people were very friendly.

I've stayed at the Grand Lido Negril (on the nude side) and although it was a great hotel, I hate AIs and would never go to another.

PSSS....It looks like what you're calling the "Grand Negril" is actually the "Grand Lido" where I stayed. Lemme put it to you this way....I saw it on "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous".

The resort is called "Breezes Grand Negril"

That's it. It was the Grand Lido when I was there.

It had a "Prude side" and a "Nude Side" and since I paid for it we went to the nude side.

I didn't bother telling my wife until we got there and the lady was showing us to our room. We went past the nude hot-tub, bar, snack counter, and while escorting us down to the nude beach my wife wispered to me "Hey Rick, I don't think those people had any clothes on".

I was already walking at a brisk pace toward the beach while discarding my clothing to the buff and I turned and said "I musta forgot to tell ya, we're on the nude side" as I dropped my shorts and ran into the water. 😀

I have many Negril stories.....🙂
