Anyone became perm/hire from contract position?

I finally signed up so I can hear your feedback on this. I've been recently offered a contract-to-hire position at the rate of $40/hr.

I've done some research on contract jobs and am quite aware of its ups & downs. But here is a question I think is best answered by you:

When you became perm from contract, how did your wage convert to salary?
1. It was converted to salary at about xx% less (10-20%).
2. It was directly converted to salary (ex $40/hr becoming $83K/yr)
3. It EXCEEDED direct salary conversion and I made more.

What's the typical trend? Isn't it usually 1? Also what are your personal experiences? Thank you.

I was converted from contract to "perm" at the beginning of August after working at the company for a year. My position is hourly though, even as a regular employee. My rate stayed exactly the same.

Then your scenario is #2 or better since you now got full benefits and your rate didn't take any hit. Also you stayed as wage so you still get OT.

yeah, i did that. got a very very small raise, so pretty much a direct conversion, but got more benefits (medical, 401k) at the expense of no longer getting paid overtime. On the upside, when work is done, you can leave early and it won't effect your pay.
 
This is going back a while (around 2001) but I was converted from contract to perm at a cut in salary. Went from $34/hr to $52k annually.
 
My friend was on contract at a major electrical engineering firm and got fired or layed off or whatever after about 8 months. It's usually a bad way to go - no benefits and the company has no vested interest in you so you're first on the chopping block.
 
I worked as a contractor for 2+ years for one of the nation's largest pharmaceutical companies. It was rare for a contractor to make the jump to full-time employee, but it did happen on occasion. I was not one of the lucky few, so I can't give you any personal experience. Good luck though, and welcome to AT.
 
My company has hired a couple contract employees as regular employees but it is rare. Generally our contract employees are in clerical/admin positions via temp agencies. When it comes time to hire permanents the temps usually don't rate on qualifications even though they are very good employees. It kind of sucks as these folks know the job, can do the job, but often don't have the paper that makes the hiring shop happy.


Edit: My one experience of being offered a contract => permanent position involved a 30% pay cut. I declined.
 
I did contract for several companies over a 10yr period and it was rare to make the conversion unless you were willing to take quite a cut, in those 10yrs I was offered twice and turned down both. At one I was at $70hr and they offered me $75k, the other I was at $50hr and they offered $65k
 
ime, you will be paid less as a perm than on contract. Perm positions often have benefits/perks not available to contractors so that has to be factored in.

Personally I prefer working on contract because it eliminates a lot of the office politics. ymmv.
 
For my first 'real job' I started as a temp. I can't remember what I was making but I'm pretty sure it was $15/hr. When I got hired as a full employee (converted), my wage became $18.75/hr, plus benefits (e.g. health & dental plans, 401k). After I year I was raised to $19.50/hr.
 
At my current (soon to be former) place of employment they regularly hire from contract. Most contractors work at $14/hr then get 29k/yr (~$13.94/hr) when they roll perm. I received a pay increase from $13/hr to 29k/yr because I went through a different recruiter and they bent me over.

I'm soon to be starting another job that is 6-month contract to perm and have an old coworker that already working their that says that the contract period is more of a probationary period than an actual contract position. I don't know what the breakdown is at this new place when it comes to contract wage vs. perm wage.
