yea, i make a lot of debit card purchases, therefore I go through "registers" in my checkbook very quickly. Instead of using all of these transaction registers to balance my account, I am thinking that I could set up the same thing using microsoft excel.

So does anyone balance their checkbook with excel? just curious

I have a spreadsheet for all my bills and when they are due. I mark them off one way when they are pending to be paid and another when they clear my bank.

Excel is wonderful for this. I have a nice little spreadsheet for my own finances. In fact, it uses past bill data to project my checking account balance day by day for the next 12 months. I can see which months I can splurge and which months I need to cut back.

On a side note, why not earn 1%-5% cash back with federally protected CC purchases instead?

do you think you could write a macro to import data from your CC or bank account? that would be sweet

And if you are off $10, $100, or $1000+ you'll never know. Or maybe you do balance it.

I'm sure it's possible, I know my bank web site can produce a csv file with all my history in it.

The few times in a blue moon I ever need a check, the teller writes one for me.

I only write 1 check/month but I have several EFTs that I keep track of.

.... This whole thread should be canned but....

MS Money is free every tax season (and other times as well). Just grab your copy of turbotax and get the FAR Money as well. Money is a spreadsheet with that capability (and many more features I don't use).

I don't see why anyone would need to balance their checkbook. I know from memory, no not to the exact penny, but I can remember to the nearest $50. But I rarely write checks.

I have an app for my Sidekick called MoneyClip. I tried using spreadsheets - problem is I don't have my PC around all the time, so I never use it. I pretty much always have my phone with me, and always have my balance.
