i almost drowned at a beach when i was ~ 10 yo. I was in water up to my chest, but got pulled out by a weird current to water over my head. Mainly I felt surprise at what was happening to me, as i lost strength & began sinking under water. Also, I could see all the happy people chilling out on the beach, so it was an odd, surreal experience for me. fortunately (?) some bigger kids saw me, and came over & pulled me back to the beach. the main thing was a sensation of total fatigue from fighting a current way stronger than me (I think that is the wrong thing to do, you're supposed to go with the current, right?). i swallowed water, but didn't get to the point of having my lungs filled up with water. It's interesting to hear so many people say it is peaceful if you accept it.

This almost happened to me once, I was messing around in the river on an intertube.

Well, it flipped, and my foot got stuck on it, with the entire rest of my body submerged under the water, that's pretty darn scary. Oddly enough I had time to think, and a couple things ran through my mind.

"This sucks."

"I wish I could swim." (No, I cannot swim.)

I was able to grab the tube a short while later and came up just in time for air.

Not even close..
I once tried to get across my high school's pool in one breath. I forced myself, and at the end, my vision blacked out and my body went numb. I ALMOST drowned. It didn't hurt a bit..

yeah, once when I was like 8, I swam too close to a huge wave pools generator. The suction of the generator kept me under, then i got up to breath, and got sucked back down under the water. This went on for like 4 minutes before the life guard noticed. It was freaky.

I just tried holding my breath for 1min 10 seconds, my face turned really red hot and I felt like I just ran a marathon.

That's just sick.

one time when i was swimming underwater i got some seaweed wrapped around my leg. i didn't really notice until i tried to surface...my face was like 10 cm under water
took me a little while to get it off, i got pretty panicked

One time I was in a pool, before i learned how to swim, and I had a inner tube on. So i was swimming forward and the inner tube was on its side and all of a sudden it went forward and so did I. I was basically upside down with the inner tube keeping me from getting up. Luckly after a few seconds I was able to right myself up again. That was pretty scary though.

i used to have tons of fun in the wave pool when i was younger. i was always as close to the generator as possible before the life guard starts yelling at you. i guess im not a bad swimmer, and i dont panic in the water, because i never had any problem breathing. maybe the pool was smaller than i remember.

Yeah, screwing around at a water slide park. Small little enclosure jammed with those inner tubes that have bottoms to them, couldn't find an opening. Then again, I can hold my breath for a minute or so underwater (I used to swim on swim team for a couple years).

Went kayaking for the first time, no spray skirt. Boat wasn't balanced properly, tipped me out. I was wearing a life jacket, got caught with my stomach against a submerged log about 2 feet down. The current bent me over facedown, couldn't breathe, couldn't sit up because of the current, and couldn't go over the log because the life jacket was keeping me up while my legs were on the other side of the log. I was there about a minute before I figured out to pull myself down underneath the log then pop out the other side. I just felt scared and pissed, 'cuz there was no way I was dying in a pansy-ass river from KAYAKING.

That happened to a friend of mine. We could all go to and back (50 meters) underwater but he heard us talking about doing 3 laps under water and tried it, he blacked out about 10 meters from the wall and the lifeguard went in after him, when the pulled him out and he spit up some of the water he still thought he was swimming lol

I've suffocated in water before, but obviously i'm still alive

first time i almost drowned i was 6....all i remember is seeing the sky through the water.

last time was when i tried to learned on how swim again at the age of 18. started swallowing water, sinking, lucky for me, my ex rescued me.

so yea, i still can't swim and will never go near another pool, ever!

yeah i'; almost did at huntington. We were out boarding and i got caught under series of waves...repeatedly...but my friends saved me 😛

yea and really your life does flash before your eyes. everything starts moving really slow. I know how to swim now though...still I hate water.

When I was younger, I was sucked into the current from a beach island and trapped under a wingdam on the Mississippi River. You are completely helpless. I think drownding is one of the worst ways to go, because it is totally unpredictable and unexpected. Fortunately, I was saved by my friends and family. I was wearing a lifejacket.. The undertow of this dam was unbeliveable. Luckily, my framily and friends ran the boat out and saved me.

I think you're arguing drowning vs. drowned.

One time when I was bodysurfing; kept getting pulled under and pounded by the waves. It was like I was getting tossed around in a washing machine. Finally got a good push off the bottom, broke through the top enough to get a breath, then pounded and tossed some more by the next wave, pushed off again enough to get a good jump ahead of the next wave to swim like a mofo out of there.

When I was like 7, I almost drowned. We were at a hotel near Hershey Park (vacation) and I was in the ~5ft section of the pool, but near the edge since I didn't know how to swim. Well, I lost my grip on the edge and was swallowing water and trying to fight it. I got back to the edge eventually, but it was scary as hell. I'm a decent swimmer now though, and I'm only afraid of landing on my belly when I jump in.
