Anyone Actually Use their Xbox360 or Ps3 as the Media Center?

I never thought I'd buy a 360 or ps3, but if the 360 is ever able to be used as an hd dvr, I'd probably buy one. The tivo series 3 costs way too much, and I don't want to have to deal with comcast forcing me to subscribe to a digital package just to be able to use theirs.

I have tried Tversity to play my DIVX files but so far have been unsuccesfull.

I am able to play MP3 but not DIVX (just hangs). But for people who dont have MCE I am told this is the only way to go, I jsut need to figure it out whats wrong.

As soon as my Modded XBOX comes back to life I will do it that way, it was much simpler using th regular xbox (modded)

You can always just convert the Divx file to a mpeg or WMV file if Tversity doesn't work.

Transcode360 is another app like Tversity.

I'm set up to use my 360 as an extender for Media Center in Vista. I don't have the files to make a good start, but I'll start working on that soon.

Hell yeah i do. In fact, 95% of my 360 use is as a media center, i rarely game on it. I've maybe put in a total of 30hrs of gaming on it, despite the fact i own like half a dozen games. That reminds me, i think i'll go and play GoW.

Many of the people that I know, don't use it as a media center. Why bother with a console when you can just connect your PC easily enough to the TV and use that directly?

A console, IMO, should primarily focus on gaming, the other stuff is just "fluff" for my uses.

PC doesn't upscale, and I already have the hd-drive for the xbox. PC and receiver aren't right next to TV. I use my PC while watching movies/dvd series.

PC doesn't upscale? If you're already outputting 1920x1080, you're already doing the 1080p upconversion by a PC. The quality should be significantly better.

Moreoever, I don't think people would be using their workstations as their media center. I wouldn't. I know how annoying it was to carry my desktop from my work room into the family room to watch a few dramas, but that's why people by HTPCs...

I used to do it, then I just hooked up my spare PC to my HDTV. For uber control, I just use VNC to get into the machine or I could start MC. Although, I think I killed the installation of MC after it hung up a lot.

Got excited about Transcode360 but upon further investigation "This software is designed to run on Windows XP Media Center Edition" I only have Windows XP 🙁

I do not want to re-encode all my DIVX files, most of the files I download (TV shows) are in DIVX format.

Back to the drawing board for me.

I stream mostly video from my MCE PC to my 360. As far as music goes, I just load up my 1GB flash drive up with mp3s and plus it directly into the usb port.

I wish someone would crack these systems or Sony/MS would open them up. All these transcoders are crap solutions. I want the systems to be able to just be able to play the video natively. I love XBMC, but the Xbox just doesn't have the horsepower necessary for many HD videos. So if someone doesn't crack these systems soon I'm may have to invest in an HTPC, but I'd rather save my money.

I'm planning on buying one so I can stream my Divx tv-show downloads to it. Anybody have luck doing that? If not, then having it stream my mp3's will work fine too. I guess I can play some games on it too...

or take a look at Tversity.com

FTW

Its what I use for my media center on my 360 and it works flawlessly

HD-DVR can be accomplished in conjuction with XP-MCE and an HD tuner.
