PSP - new hardware adapater to connect using an external HD...
currently I have a psp + 40gig HD + 1gb memory stick.

Now there I can directly connect to the Harddrive itself.. (only good in train, bus, plane.. where having 2 items wouldnt cause you an issue)
if not, just have your External Harddrive (i suggest Acer) in the car or backpack, lockerroom.. whatever w/ the USB cable.
Use the 1gig Memory Stick (approx 120-175 mp3) or few movies (depending how good the encoding is) on the stick.
When your done, hook it up to the acer, delete the files, or move it into the acer and move the new files in (takes approx less than 5 minutes to move an entire gig)

no complains here.. im walking around with FUll Metal Alchemist (the entire series)
The entire series of Hellsing
entire series of Getbackers
Entire series of Last Exile
and half my music (15gb)

im a happy camper... i dont even play video games on my psp.. well the occasional homebrew Sudoko and Tetris

Do you have any links? So far, I've only seen the old 20GB Zen PMC on sale for $200 on closeout, and that model is lower capacity and a LOT chunkier. All I see on Froogle are $400 units.

Ok...that sorta defeats the portability aspect doesn't it? The PSP sucks as a portable media player. I don't own a PSP but my brother has one and I've played around with it, and quite frankly, it sucks as a media player. It's a slightly better video player than the iPod but ONLY because of the larger screen. It has crap for storage since it's topped out at 4GB Memory Sticks. Memory Sticks are hella expensive too. While you can connect an external HD to it, that adds bulk and seriously degrades the portability aspect.

The fact is, the PSP is a great little system for video games but as a dedicated music/video player it falls short.

If music playing and the occasional video clip or tv episode is your thing, the iPod will work fine. If video playback is your main feature, go with something like the Zen Vision, though you'd want to invest in extra batteries.

I dunno. We are discussing the availability and debating the merits of a hot new piece of computer hardware. I don't see it being any different than the 7200.9 availability thread.

Amen brother. The new iPod makes the old 20GB Photo version look like a brick. For me, functionality isn't the whole story. Good design and practicality play a big part, too. I'd rather have a small, compact relatively cheap player that fits nicely in my pocket than carry around a PSP and a hard drive. Even the new battery pack and microdrive combo isn't all that practical because it will cost you $250 for the PSP, $200 for the accessory and it will still only give you the storage capacity of the iPod Nano.

well, all my videos has been encoded by me and formatted to playback in the mp4 version during the time when avi waasnt able to playback.
however, now the homebrew scene were able to allow the psp to playback other extension and I disagree with the playback view as it was excellent quaility.
dont expect a cheap vid to play crystal clear in a psp...

"defeat the portability"... well.. that depends on each individual..
I walk around with a for the lack of a better word: "handbag"/pouch for my other things.. so a small 40 gig HD, which is smaller than the psp isnt a big deal to me.
Also all my pants are cargo pants... so I could place it anywhere.

Im not a SONY fanboy as I hate Sony however, with ipod.. the size to me is to small for comfort.
too small that if it falls, I wotn even notice it.
with the psp, still small enough and comfortable for me, if it falls, the noise will be heard and with the case, I dont have to worry about dmg to the psp.

but lets say.. storage.. for the most part, in our daily activity, many people dont listen to over 150+ song...
8 hours of work = 130 songs avg (I've tested it!)
during break, I change my music to videos.. watch my movie or 23min anime episode.. great quality..
dunno bout you, but give the psp a chance.. sony messed up big time releasing a powerful little system that the homebrew scene were able to utlize.

Oh, just to put it out there. For music, the PSP Is vastly inferior to just about any other MP3 player on the market, according to a bunch of people at head-fi. Tread with caution if that's your primary reason.

Nah. Any portable system will eventually be hacked. Gameboy, GBA, DS, all copyable to my knowledge. And the PSP can run third party code.

Hmmmm... 30gb Video Ipod is tempting

Ahhhhh... What should I do if I want a player that plays music mostly, and from time to time plays some videos?

And is it easy to convert a dvd to the ipod video format?

That is a big question mark right now. I'm not sure if there will ever be a one step DVD to iPod convertor, but it will likely be pretty easy to take DVD rips created from DVD Shrink and convert them into the proper size MPEG4.

I doubt iTunes will ever be able to rip DVDs. Even if some studios eventually allow legal lower quality DVD rips once next gen high def DVD technology is in place (not likely), Sony would probably do everything the can to stop legal rips from happening as that would be a huge threat to the UMD market.

I think you are kind of SOL as far as cases are concerned right now. The 5G models are a lot slimmer with a bigger screen than the old models, so the oldd cases don't fit any more. AFAIK, there aren't any cases on the market right now, and there likely won't be any available until November.

The PRIE Ambassador is the one that I'm holding out for. It is a bit pricey at $50, but it just looks so nice. Plus, it comes with a set of protective films (although I'll likely have mine scratched up a bit before this case becomes available).

yea primary use is music.

if you really want video and have the space for a psp, you have the space to carry a laptop which is far superior for video. neither is pocket sized really;)

anybody go jogging with the video iPod? how is it?

nobody yet?

Seeing as the 60GB model has a 64mb buffer, I can't see the thing skipping very easily. I used to run 10k w/ my 10GB 3G iPod and it never skipped on me once.

Cool thanks. I guess i'm just concerned more though about dropping it while running. Is there a wrist strap available for it?
