I did once and worked with the employer for another 18 months until they canned me basically immediately after we lost a contract I was under. I then called the employer who'd offered me the original job and a few days later got an offer from them. It worked out ok in the end.

There is almost always more than money as a reason you're trying to leave your current job though, and never forget that.

i was kind of surprised to hear how nice your old boss was. as for the consultant thing, he'll get fired soon enough if he keeps being wasteful wth money.

He's been making boneheaded decisions for the last 10 years. I doubt he's going anywhere.

that's too bad. the company would probably be better off without him financially if that is the case.

More than likely.

However, 10 years ago when this department started he and 2 other people did a good job handling a large number of users with limited resources so he's still riding those glory days.

UPDATE 6: Incompetence abounds. My boss was overheard saying that instead of hiring a replacement for me and the other server admin being deployed in 5 weeks we should instead cross train everyone in our office (a Novell admin, lady who manages surf control and AS/400, 2 network admins, and a project manager) on VMware, blades, SAN, etc. and then supplement them with consultants.

Amazing the effort and money they'll exhaust to not only do things wrong, but to go to any means not to actually pay employees yet they'll waste massive amounts of cash on consultants.

You're leaving. Why do you care?

Because I leave friends behind and this idiocy further reinforces why I'm leaving in the first place.

Cross training is a resume builder. Your friends should be ecstatic!

lol @ update 6, never underestimate ego and fucking incompetence in the corporate environment.

4 months ago I left a position for similar reasons. They decided to re-org a perfectly working and fluid department (this happens way too fucking often, I'm sure you guys can relate) and split it into these two stupid teams that made no sense and basically cut my ability to do my job in half. Two of the other engineers left because of it leaving just me to handle all the responsibilities of the new team. Hilariously though, they expected me to continue to do work on both teams because they desperately needed me and my help but they just didn't want to have to pay me for it. I decided to give them a firm response.. either promote me and pay me more (I only asked for 4 or 5k more a year) for doing the job of two people, let me switch to the other team since majority of my work and interest lied there anyway, or I'll find another gig.

Long story short, they called my bluff and said go for it.. I had another job lined up and I put in my two weeks. They went to 0 engineers who knew how to do my job and had no one to replace me. Last I heard they were paying thousands of dollars to consultants who still don't understand the system. My old boss emails me from time to time asking me for advice or help on the environment... never underestimate how fucking stupid non-technical management is. Instead of spending 4-5k or letting me switch to the other team for FREE, they've blown 10x that amount. Golf clap.

My company is like that, too.

For some reason, they'd rather waste money on consultants than actually pay the people they employ. They are so vehemently against paying their employees market value it's insane.

More than likely they'll pay me a few thousand to train after I'm gone plus another extra $10k-$20k per year on consultants when giving me an extra $10k per year and I wouldn't have been looking for another job. Those costs will only increase as they continue to expand out the blade/SAN/VMware environment.

Cest le vie... I'm off to something bigger and better.

That's all you can do Child of Wonder.. you'll never change corporate incompetence. Move on and forget about them.

The sick thing is that they just don't understand what you do or how valuable you are. They also don't understand how terrible consultants really are. I had to fight with my director for a month to get rid of a consultant they hired to install Websphere (lol) on some UNIX boxen. He demanded root access and they gave it to him. Not only did this guy just copy and paste commands out of a word doc without knowing at all what they do, he would come to me constantly to ask me for help on doing this. Management just didn't budge on it.. I basically had to wait for him to fuck up a production host (which didn't take long) for them to concede my point, and then they were pissed off at me for getting rid of an asset. Fucking unbelievable.

Sorry you had to experience it COW, it's happened once too often for me. I made a decision to only take jobs that have a very clear definition of what technical and non-technical people are responsible for. My current job basically leaves all decisions for technology in our hands and rarely bothers us at all. You just need to find a different environment. Luckily for me, my skills are extremely sought after and I can be choosy about my job even in these horrible economic conditions.
