Anyone able to explain why AMD didn't reveal more about the R9-290X?

They said the BF4 special edition GPU will be pre-orderable a week from now, so why so little actual information? Do they expect people to pre-order it without any more concrete details regarding it's specs? Or is this some bizarre idea marketing came up with to add "suspense and anticipation" to their launch and more details will dribble out next week?

Good question. Very light on the details of the actual hardware, and we don't actually know when they will be released, except sometime in October?

Reveal more?

With 8000 in firestrike, as they showed. Its a card just below the GTX780. And they added AMDs TrueAudio. There really isnt much new about the card, rather than just more of the same. Same thing about the entire rebrand of the current GPUs, just with increased TDP and a slight clock boost. Hence why all the focus on audio and so on.

It shows >8000 on firestrike. There was no solid number. Anyways, I'm sure there will be reviews up prior to October 3. Otherwise who the hell would pre-order it?

QFT, at least 8K in Firestrike; there was a color gradient at the top of the bar to indicate that the bar goes higher than shown. Logically speaking, I also believe we will see more concrete numbers by Oct 3. I'm guessing the NDA expires on the 3rd.

Their graph stopped just below 8000. Not above.

If it performed better. I am quite sure they would tell us. The preorder style sounds more like the FX release. Buy first, get dissapointed later.

They also said it was their fastest card, not the worlds fastest. Its simply below Titan and the GTX780.

That's what I thought initially too, until I noticed that the other cards have bars which stop at a clearly defined height, i.e. no gradient.

But your other point bears weight as well; I too would state that the card is faster if it indeed was. That is, unless AMD is purposely withholding information in order to make a surprise later but the odds are unlikely.

how do you figure the r290x is below a 780 with a score like 8k in firestrike? the top 780 gtx on the link above only scores a 7732 in firestrike and that card is definetly OC'd like crazy.

They gave detailed info, but sadly, not for everyone.
From anand event log:
06:43PM EDT - Compared to consoles, on PCs developers could only do less with more, with Mantle now the PC developers can get more with more. More info on Mantle will be available at AMD's developer conference in November. Looks like we're finally done, the rest of the day is under NDA. We'll share more info as soon as we can!

yeah, in that case :hmm:

The problem with Firestrike is it's a poor gauge of performance when you don't know what CPU was being used. CPU has a huge affect on the score as 3DMark benefits from cores/threads. So a SB-E or IB-E with a lesser GPU can score as well or better than a 4 core chip with a better GPU. I'm not even sure how AMD processors do, but I assume it's pretty poorly as I don't see any in the rankings.

Also when you are looking at the scores listed, those are all hugely overclocked cards for the most part.

AMD listed the R9 280X as scoring 6500 in Fire strike when in reality it scores about 7100-7200 so I think AMD was low balling. It would be smart to not reveal the absolute performance of their cards. 290X will prob score 8500-8600 like the leaks suggest.

Man, that presentation was so awkward to watch I couldn't finish it. It seems like AMD is stepping up their software game considerable and trying to differentiate themselves even more in the GPU market. What I want to know is price. If the R9 290X costs nearly as much as the GTX 780, AMD is shooting themselves in the foot.

I didn't see anything exciting at all with presentation. The audio was really disappointing, we don't need that unnecessary change with the 4+ core CPUs we have today.

If they are going to bundle 290X with BF4 they better let sites review the cards before the preorder starts. Maybe people are going to be upset if AMD cards are a HUGE advantage over nvidia cards seeing how popular BF4 is going to be.

The whole thing felt like a Apple PR gibberish.

I think the reason is because Mantle was the big deal. I know they spent a ton of time on audio too. But basically they wanted to push that being in all the consoles is going to be great for PC gamers with GCN cards.

Score differences are pretty inflated on Firestrike as well, so I would take this with a grain of salt. In the end, really only two things matter. (1) FPS and (2) CF/SLI scaling.

Only the bold are gonna be preordering a $600 gpu without checking out reviews first...the smart people would wait till the card officially comes out and make sure there is no day 1 driver mess or make sure their $600 is at least well spent.

Because the product is late and underwhelming given the time elapsed since the 7970 was launched.

You can tell just how bad it is by the 15 mantle threads today.....I've never seen anything like it. I thought I was in the console forum for a minute...

But mantle is for the PC.
You got that part, right?
