Warm weather is approaching and I am interested in getting a mountain bike, I am clueless about them.

I plan to use it for exercising and also transportation around town since my car is totaled.

Please list some good brands. Thanks

You get what you pay for once you hit the $500 mark.

$1500 is best bang for your buck. most compettive price range in the industry, etc.

I have a Schwinn (Schwinn 4-Banger) if you live near CT that I am trying to sell. Was $2100 new, probably worth $900 now.

GT is a good brand, and it's not like Bose. They actually earned their reputation.

Some people love cannondale. I personally think they are better avoided. That's probably the one brand I would say to avoid.

If you intend to become a har core off roader, you are actually better off with a hard-tail.

Easiest way to go - there's probably a bike shop nearby that sells Trek's, they've got models for every type of riding.

If you just plan on using it for on-road biking, then consider a road bike instead.

I forget the type referred to as "hybrid", but that might be a good option.

I forgot in my post. Going fast on roads with a mountain bike .... it just doesn't work unless you were to regear the bike.
