Anybody worked with leather before?

No, not S&M.

I want to take this up as a new hobby. Probably starting with learning how to sew with leather with simple designs like pouches and basic bags and cases.

Not going to try any dying or tanning. I live in an apartment. Roommates wouldn't approve.

Anybody tried this as a hobby?

Not as a hobby, but I used to make my own knife sheaths, and different pouches and cases. I always saved my old boots and stuff for leather to work with. Thrift shops would also be a good source. Pickup purses, and boots for leather to use. I use a Meyers sewing awl for stitching.

Edit:
If you want to make decorative designs, a cheap soldering iron makes a good burner.

Went to Barnes and Noble to see if there were any books there on leathercraft. There were none.
Thought I would find them near the gun related books, the collectors digests, gunsmithing, etc. None of those either.
Apparently, they are trying to turn us into a bunch of nancys.
But I did find three rows of manga bullshit.
Off to Amazon I go.

I don't want to dissuade you from stimulating the economy, but why not look online. Make your expensive connection do something more productive than neffing around here.
