Anybody watching "whale wars"?

Whale wars is where a bunch of hippies rent a boat and then shoot paintballs and BBs at whaler ships and crews. The crews retaliate with their own military issued pellet guns, which provokes "It's not fair" outcries amongst the wannabe world messiahs.

Yes, I agree with the OP, these people should be arrested and locked up in a mental asylum for little biznatches.

there was a thread on it when it started last year. some greenpeace idiots or whatever have a ship and go harass japanese whalers

thing is, they really, seriously harass them to an unreasonable level...and were talking about people with little to no maritime experience annoying the shit out of a whaling crew on a whaling vessel by boarding the vessel, or throwing things at it, or trying to tie up the props to stall the ship

the people are morons and take things way too far.
 
I watched two shows on Friday (must have been some sort of marathon). Apparently the "Captain" of this ship was kicked out of Greenpeace (Can that be done? Seriously?) for being too radical in his beliefs and his actions. So he gets it into his head to get a boat and help out the Australian government in stopping whale killing by some Japanese scientists who are claiming they are killing whales for research.

From what I saw, they do go out of their way to disable the research ships. From throwing stink bombs to wrapping ropes around the propellers. The leader goes as far as asking for volunteers to be 'hostages' aboard the research boat, thinking that will bring him international attention to this matter.

The dude is certifiable. He kind of looks like the Cornelia Marie captain (for those who watch Deadliest Catch) but has more of a psycho-imgoingtokillyourgirlfriendwhileyouwatch look.

The japanese should just throw them off into the ocean. They're pirates afterall.
 
They're lunatics. But I still wouldn't mind it if they torpedoed those Japanese 'research' ships and left the crews to die in the freezing water.

I watched a few and see how crazy these guys are but stopped since better shows were on but if I ever see more coming out and nothing is recording I will dvr them.
 
I find the show to be fantastic. There is one gripe I have with it... It is only an hour long!

My wife and I caught a little of this show. We were stunned to see that these 'volunteers' boarded another vessel without permission and with unclear intent. When the crew of the boarded vessel stops and detains these pirates, you can see these environmentalist nuts practically orgasm as they exploit these images.

Let me get this straight. A pirate boards my vessel. Our crew man handles, controls and flexi cuffs the boarder until we can figure out WTF we're going to do with him. Environmentalists are now calling the 'volunteer' a 'hostage' and splooging over pictures of an overzealous activist being detained. They immediately transmit those pics over the internets constantly describing our 'pirate' as our 'hostage' and intentionally mischaracterizing this to further their agenda.

I know that they don't look like they're from Somalia, but the U.S. Navy has some great techniques when dealing with pirates. Speaking of which, why aren't Environmentalists more racially representative? I'd love to torpedo their ship and then serve them a summons for a civil action while they're on their life raft.

The show does get a reaction out of me, though. I guess that's what the producers wanted.


 
The show is entertaining. The captain and his crew are complete hippie vegan nutjobs, but at least they make for good television.

Do I believe in their cause? No. Do I believe the Japanese are skirting the laws a little for profit? Yes, who doesn't.
 
i keep rooting for the whalers to accidentally attack a navy ship and get blown up. ..hmm maybe with all the piracy a ship will think they are pirates And blow them up. either way i will be entertained.
 
I only watched one episode and the captain pretended to be shot by a bullet that was stopped by something metal he was wearing. I don't remember what it was, but equivalent to a story about a police officer who was saved by his badge stopping a bullet.

His story is that he felt an irritating sensation in his chest and eventually discovered that there was a bullet against whatever metal object "saved" him. He claims the Japanese fishing crew tried to assassinate him.

I've never been shot wearing something bulletproof (or shot at all for that matter), but every time I've seen that happen before, the person has been in rough shape after the bullet is stopped. Just because it doesn't make it through the bulletproof layer doesn't mean the energy is magically gone. You'd definitely know if you were shot by the bullet and would likely have bruising / maybe even a broken rib or something depending on what was fired at you. This captain claimed he had no idea he had been shot until he found that bullet eventually and their acting was terrible.

Some Japanese official wrote a letter explaining that his story is not consistent with getting hit by a bullet and the Whale Wars crew were outraged at the allegations that they made up the story etc.

That's the last time I watched it.
 
Just watched it the other night. While I think their cause is a good one, they're just acting like idiots.

"Oh hey, let's get a boat, fill it with hippies, and go harass some Japanese fishing boats in Antarctica."

The first (and last) time I watched that show I heard the people on ship talking about how they'd be willing to die for their captain and their cause. While I admire the fact that they're working towards stopping an injustice, putting their lives on the line for some whales is just fucking stupid.
 
I wish the japanese boats had a little 5" gun and peppered the shit out of the activists boat. While I don't agree with what they (whalers) are doing, I hate hippies who take things too far.

Their cause is not good. Primarily for the fact that whales are doing just fine.

A few species that I forgot are going down, but I doubt the whalers are hunting them.

I wouldn't call that stupid if someone believes in a just cause strong enough to be willingly to risk their life over. People race into burning buildings without a second's thought to save pets and animals. I'll admit I haven't seen the show so don't know if these guys are legit or it's just for publicity and have no real intention of risking their lives when it comes down to it...
 
I admire their will to help innocent animals but it's clearly not going to make a dent in the illegal whaling.

If they were hunting Rights, Blues, or Humpbacks I would fully support a massive cruise missile strike on the whaling fleet.

However, Minke and Fin whales are the two species the Japanese hunt (which are doing quite well IIRC). Regardless, international law forbids the hunting of whales for food. Anyone with a brain realizes that the "research" cover is totally bogus. We seem to be able to research endangered species just fine without killing and slicing them up.

In summary, their cause appears just and I respect their passion. Their methods also appear to be oriented towards creating a nuisance rather than harm (never saw the episode where they messed with the props). Besides, writing letters of protest and holding fund raising dinners would make for boring-ass television.
