Anybody want to help me compile a really cheap system?

I just got asked to put together a system for around $500. I was able to put a decent system together for about $560, but want to see if it's possible to get it down a little lower.

Things that are needed:

2 bays - One CD-ROM, and One CD-RW
Athlon XP CPU
40GB HDD
Cheap case & PSU
256MB RAM Min
Windows XP Home OEM Version (yes, legit)
Monitor, Mouse, and keyboard

i'm trying to get it down to $500 or lower if possible. For a price like that i'm sure i can get select parts like CPU and stuff from FS/T

thanks 🙂

Or a Dell -- Celerons are lousy for games, but fine for most everything else.

ah, didn't know about that thread;
i do realise dells are pretty cheap and decent computers, however they asked me if i could try to help them avoid dell. I said i'm going to try to compile a system like that, but if not I will tell them to purchase a celly from dell.

No reason for a Celeron recommendation. If he is going to give up the Athlon, a click here will get a 2.8 GHz P4, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB HD, CDRW, XP Home, 17" CRT, 2 year warranty, etc. for $449 after rebate (shipping is free). Add in $20 for the extra CD-ROM you install yourself (Dell overcharges for that).

I realize people who want Athlons tend to hate Dell. I'm not recommending Dell for this person. Just that you can get a quite decent computer for $500 without building yourself.

hm, the dell system is a pretty good deal...anybody have any additional coupons? 🙂
It isn't the perfect system, but I just got it delivered today (with 17" LCD instead - slightly more money and a different link is required). It doesn't have an AGP video card slot, but you never mentioned one in your first post. It already has an e-value code, so I don't know if you can find any stackable coupons with it.
