Anybody using a Micron DDR PC yet?

Should I take a chance on this for Christmas? They say delivery for the 1 GHZ CPU with 200 MHZ memory is running 10-28 days delivery, averaging 12.

Or should I take the safe route, Dell 866 PIII, or custom ASUS CUSL2? My primary concern is long life, rock solid operation, and upgradability. Use is just surfing (hopefully DSL) and casual gaming.

I have been leaning toward custom for the high quality components, but Dell is luring me with decreasing prices, and Micron with lust for speed. I wanted to wait for A7M266, but the family can't wait anymore.

I would say go with the Micron DDR just to try it out... but if it's a family PC then I would stay away from new and unproven technologies 🙁

There may be some issues with first-gen boards, so a custom CUSL2 system would probably be a better purchase.

Thanks for the help. I am still in a heck of a quandary.

dcdomain: Thanks for the link, that is actually pretty good news for the more affordable 200 MHZ model, 5-6 day waits. Unless of course any problems with the 266 are also present in the 200 MHZ but just to a degree where it still works.

Does anyone have recent experience with Microns of any type? From what I have found so far, it seems Dell is awfully hard to beat on service and lately even on price. Also, I think Intel makes the Dell motherboards, which I would tend to be more confident in than the new Gigabyte motherboard in the Micron. Will Micron take care of me if there are problems? It seems they really push the technology such as DDR, but can they deliver service like Dell?

Micron has excellent support. Last year my parents old PII 266 (near the end of its warranty) lost its mobo/PS is some unexplained incident (my dad screws a lot of things up) and after a minute or two on the phone after about a 10min wait I had a new PS and mobo in the mail. They do have very good support and I recommend them to all my friends who have PC-buildaphobia.
