The ATI Silencer takes up (i think) 1 1/2 slots...i think.
Now, if you have an Asus board your good to go since it has that nice doulbe slot design. I see you have DFI, it most likely WILL fit, but it'll be a tigh squeeze.

I assume you've tried?

SO are there ANY aftermarket cooling solutions for us SLI users that dont have an ASUS board?

Deoends on your mother board.. The DFI Expert and ASUS boards are the only ones I know of that will fit. I have 1 whole slot in between my 2 GT's and the silencer will NOT fit on the top card. Lucklily I have the EVGA CO so it isnt as loud as a reference HSF, but I have the NV Sliencer on the bottom card.

The silencer is just a hair too big, the nose of the fan will rub on the bottom card if you try and wedge it in there.

Not sure if the Zalman solution would work, maybe someone that owns it can chime it.

hmmm... I guess I'll just keep the silencer for my EVGA 515 and I'll just get the CO for the top slot when the time comes. Quite dissapointing though!

Its not too bad. The 517(co) stock and 515 model W Vga silencer is actually quieter than the 515 was by itself with the stock cooler.

Thanks for the insight guys! Very helpful replies.

The disappointing part is I was hoping to use the Silencer on the top slot in order to draw the hot air off my northbridge which runs 50-55*C.

On a side note:

Does the eVGA 516 (CO SE I think) and the 517 CO shipwith the same cooler?

Monarch has the CO SE for $310 right now, I think I'll jump on that if it's the same cooler as the 517. Yes I know NewEgg has them for $299, but I live in California, so if I dont have to pay tax, $310 is a much better deal!

The 516 is the better deal. $20 for 10mhz isn't worth it.

Not only that, but you can flash the 516 with the 517 bios ( or edit it yourself ) and get that 10mhz right back ;)

Another thing that you need to look at on your mobo before you run SLI with dual slot coolers is SATA plug placement. Even with an Asus SLI mobo, the Silicon Image SATA plugs are completely unusabe with two dual slot cards.

Judging from this picture of the UT nF4 Ultra-D, it looks like there might be an issue with what I think are either USB or Firewire connectors next to the chipset fan.

Wondering the same!

Zalman VF700 on top card and ACS Silencer on bottom card!

Also good to know no issues with the DFI board. Thanks moonboy

The problem you'll face with the top cooler is the backplate from the bottom one. The Silencer and Zalman both have screws/nuts that stick up from the back that will interfere with double-slot coolers. I've seen them fitted, but with the screws and nuts shortened.

This thread is a little confusing... I am in the same boat as the OP. I also have the DFI Ultra-D moded to SLI-D and I'm wanting to go SLI right after Christmas too. It looks to me if you use the NV Silencer on the 2nd PCI-E slot, it will cover the 2nd PCI slot, making it un-usable...? I am okay with that. But after reading this post, I am still a little confused... I see mentioning of shortening screws and nuts... :frown:

Can 2 x GeForce 7800GT SLI + 2 x NV Silencer 5 rev 3 be used together on the DFI Ultra/SLI (not the Expert) board or not? :)

-Thanks

No it won't.

I've tried 2x Silencers and 2x Zalman, they do NOT work in most SLI boards.

Don't think of using one of each either, it seems like it will fit, but the back screws of the Silencer will actually go into the heatsink space of the Zalman, with a very few mm clearance from the fan blades. Any slight movement of the cards and the Zalman fan would make contact with the Silencer screws. NOT a good thing. Even if you shortened them, it's too much risk...

Either stick with single slot cooling or buy an Asus motherboard with two slots in between the video cards, or the new DFI Expert.
