Who here uses a futon as their only bed? I think I'm gonna start doing this, but I need a good pad. Where'd you get yours?

Bought it at an Oak furniture store. The Futon Factory also has a nice selection of matresses. Since you plan on using it as your primary bed, I suggest you get a wooden frame.

i've been using a futon as my primary bed for the summer...
its not too bad, but like minendo suggests you should go with the wooden frame one..
Also, I would get a couple of those egg crate things, makes it soooo comfortable.

Got a used (metal) futon bed and I'm using it for my bed . . ..

Soo uncomfortable. I'd rather sleep on the floor. :|:|:|

Don't be stingy on the mattress thickness. buy the thickest one you can afford one. nothing less than 8" and 9" if you can.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but is there a way to make my futon more comfortable? The mattress was used for 2 years and it's flattened out, so I can feel thos damn bars on my back . . ..

*new idea for new thread!

Get a piece of 5# (6# if you can get it/afford it) viscoelastic (memory) foam cut to size. Sleep on it.

'twould be good to have a pillow made from the same stuff. It's excellent.

Yeah I slept on mine which has a 8" matress with egg crate on top for like 3 years, I loved it. Wood frame. Only problem is my height I had to sleep diagonal or I hit the armrests.

I already have one, it's a metal frame. I didn't know there were wood frame ones out there. Howard, where do you get this memory foam? I was gonna just get some eggs, is the viscoelastic foam that much better?

futon and sofa beds are ok if you are light, and or great for company, that you don't want to stay along time.

I've been using my bifold futon for years. About three years ago, I bought a futon mattress with springs inside. It's not really recommended for folding up constantly, but it can do it once in awhile. It's pretty comfortable, but still not as good as a nice firm bed. I'm sorry, I don't remember where I bought it.

I just got a new matress from the futon factory which was sooo much more confortable than the one I had before. I was told that the matress should be flipped every month for some reason.

You're going to have to look/ask around in your area. The major retailers that sell them as sleeping goods will rape you on prices. Find some manufacturers or wholesalers of the stuff.

me, but i've got a mattress, it's weird..it's like a big one-person bed but it can act as a nice sofa too 'cause it's got like a railing on one side. I dunno..it's hard to explain

Maybe I oughta just buy a full size mattress and not worry about folding it up. (Or is a futon a queen size?)

many people i know that have slept on futons for years have finally seen the light - developed constant back pain/aches, etc, and after switching back to normal mattresses, they were amazingly better

to fix feeling the bars put a piece of plywood down between the mattress and the frame.

I sleep on a futon, but it's not like a sofa type.. It's a tri-fold one ( looks like _/\ when folded) that basically looks like a mattress on a wooden frame. It's got a 6" mattress and an egg carton thingy underneath.. comfy enough for me. :)

Good god no, I can't stand futons. Do your back a favor and get a real bed.

I had one for years, mostly for guests when they would visit.

The guy at the futon store said that the ones with the foam core were the best, so we got one of those, It wasn't bad at all. You couldn't feel the frame through the mattress. No one ever complained about it.

There seems to be a huge difference in the quality of futons, so it would pay to shop around. Most places sell the cheapest mattress they can, no doubt because most people buying them aren't interested in spending much.
