Like their DKA is basically a popover muffin, but with croissant layers & layered flavors

I thought that when you said you were on Team DKA, you were talking about Diabetic Ketoacidosis. So it's actually an unfortunately named product, eh?

Three years later, has the cronut fad run its course? I'm betting the lines are just a little bit shorter now. How long did it last? Six months? Three?

They are still going strong, fucking things are around $3 here.

I am officially on Team DKA now. Same idea as a Cronut (same bakery, newer pastry design), but using a muffin/popover format instead. Sweet going down with a massive, delicious buttery aftertaste.

no pics = fail

Yeah...I ate them all :D It was a good day for food...I hit the city early, zipped up the new WTC tower (what a view!), hit up half a dozen food joints, and drove home before traffic hit.

I cannot move now from my fatness.

Consuming DKA's probably causes DKA :D

http://dominiqueansel.com/?wpsc-product=dka-set-4pcs

Again, similar to a Cronut, but stores dry for up to 2 days, which is an advantage over the cronut, which is supposed to be consumed within 8 hours.

Kouign Amanns aren't a Dominique Ansel creation obviously, though their version does compare OK with good ones in Paris.

I've had cronuts several times and have found a wide variation in quality, which isn't particularly surprising considering how delicate they are. At their best, they are a world class pastry, very flaky with a perfect filling (really like the blueberry lemon). Another time it was overly heavy with the filling making it a bit soggy (I think it was Dulce de Leche). Certainly worth getting if you're a pastry lover - but if you are someone who "loves" the croissants at your local bakery, it's probably not worth the wait.

I've also had the misfortune of trying a few imitations from places like Paris Baguette - garbage.

Sometimes it's just about introducing it to a new market, too - he's a French baker who has introduced some pretty neat concepts to America.

On a tangent, if you have a Trader Joe's near you, their frozen mini croissants are amaaaaaazing. Put on parchment overnight to thaw & rise, then bake for 15 minutes. They quadruple in size & are super super awesome

My buddy did, waited like 3 hours in NYC. Said it was awesome.

Of course, he's going to say it's awesome or he'll look like a dumbass for waiting in line for 3hrs to buy an overpriced pastry.

I can vouch for Kaido's mini croissant from TJ's rec; have a box in my freezer right now.

Kaido does DKA serve coffee?

Pssssh, go a few blocks over to City Bakery & get their amazingly creamy hot chocolate with house-made giant marshmallow:

I may or may not have killed one of those with a DKA while sitting in traffic :D

Seriously tho, I have no idea how they do it & it's ruined all other croissants for me (the almond ones & chocolate ones are also pretty excellent, but the regular croissants are just like, I dunno, cotton candy). Breakfast lately is overnight oatmeal with a spoonful of brown sugar, a TJ's mini croissant, and some fresh OJ from my Epica. Morning food coma ftw :D
