ha ha, funny how this thread started as "what do you think of Zhang Ziyi".... hm... i was dissappointed in the beginning cause she didn't look too good in the "aristocrat" clothes, but by the end, she convinced me a bit that she was pretty cute ; )

The movie was a testament to the beauty of the old style kung fu movie, done in art house style. I thought the flying was an allegory for the purity of their spirit. Fat (in China, first names are last) could fly, and the others could not because their spirits were not totally pure...until at the very end when Ziyi flew, to satisfy her lover's desires.

Other than that, the movie sucked A$$.

Just kidding...liked it a lot.

From a pure esthetic sense, one of my favourite movies is still A Chinese Ghost Story. My Chinese ex-wife would shudder when the older ghost projected her tongue. :p

I'd like to add to my post earlier since I sort of got the "you can't appreciate good kung-fu movies" feeling.

I have seen several of these type of movies. I also think I have seen every movie Bruce Lee ever did.
I also realize that many movies speed up the film to make the action appear "faster". I was just joking about whooping up on Bruce. He was feakin' greased lightning. Nobody can touch Bruce IMO. But that's just me.

I understand and have seen that alot of these types of movies have similiar "flying" stunts.

I just thought that there was an "incredible" amount of it in this movie. Just too much. AT the beginning when they are chasing the thief on the roof, it just goes on and on, and then the tree scene was equally bad. This was the worst case of the "bad wire" job. The girls feet would go on and off the limb while she was supposed to be balancing on it.

I'm not knocking the movie at all. I think it was great. Some of the best fight scenes I've ever seen. I just thought they overdid the flying/floating/levitating thing too much.

After seeing the movie not knowing who Zhang Zi Yi was ... hubba hubba :p
What a cute honey!!!!

We all come to expect flying in chinese martial arts movie. But this one i thought they did over did it. Kinda start looking a bit ridiculous as the flying don't even look realistic. ahhh well can't win them all.

Actually I thought she was very beautiful but for a momment I felt ickie like I was watching kiddie porn in a few scenes (just because she looks so young). But that feeling soon passed.. great great movie.

<<really? i'm pretty sure she did all the parts where you could see her face:p>>

I heard from an interview that Yeoh did the stunts all by herself...she got pretty banged up too..got an injury that sidelined her for a month or so. She was also my favorite in the movie.

Plus, I'm sure Michelle Yeoh could be great like Chow Yun Fat...I mean, they accompanied each other...I'm sure he'll find some time to teach her how to properly fly. :)

As for ZhangZiyi, she decoded the secrets from the school (where Chow Yun Fat was trained) and that's why she's so good.

i was at barnes and nobles last night and spotted the movie book for it. (not worth buying. its essentially $20 for about 5 pages of commentary and the script...)

Here are the interesting points-

- Its the first time Chow Yun Fat ever held a sword or did martial arts
- Michelle Yeoh broke her knee but still managed to do all the stunts and wire work herself.
- Fat and Yeoh both had to learn mandarin and had a really hard time doing it.
- Zhang Ziyi never did martial arts so she went through a quick training to make her look like she knew. She did have a few stunt doubles (girls and guys). But as it was said on this thread, the closeups probably are her. If Yuen Woo Ping can make Keanu look like he knows his stuff im sure he can make the girl look right.
- A double edged blade is called a sword. A single edged is called a knife regardless of how long it is
- Fat is really admired and Yeoh and Ziyi did alot of good compliments towards him.
- Fats role was supposed to be Jet Li but when they couldnt get him and got Fat instead they had to trim down alot of action and put more story.
- Wires were removed using CGI. They spent 15Mill on this movie. im surprised it cost that much....

I dont know if anyone cares about this stuff but i found it interesting. The movie isnt oscar worthy but it definitely was good.

Really interesting tidbits batzy. thanks

Zhang Ziyi was pretty damn cute. She looked like a little girl in the beginning but she started to look more mature towards the end.

I liked the fighting scenes. Altough there were a lot better fight scenes these were pretty good. Those girls can kick-ass! I liked the scene where Zhang is fighting in the tea house. That was badass. And also the sword fight with the two girls. The final fight was kinda short and sh*tty in my opinion though. Overall it was a GREAT movie. :)

IMO, CTHD is a good movie, but not nearly a great movie as people seem consistant in claiming. There wasn't anything that makes me feel this is the best film of the year, nor even one of the better films I have seen recently. I left from "Traffic" thinking about what had happened in the movie. I left from "Crouching Tiger" wondering when my next meal was. I admit that the fighting was well done, although the flying was a bit unrealistic and hard to imagine. This didn't take away from the movie very much though. And it wasn't in a lack of excellent acting or directing or script or dialouge that caused me to rate this only a good rating. It is the fact that the story is pretty mundane and character developement seems to be weak at best. Also the fact that none of the fights in this movie ever seem to resolve anything. They are just there to show that people in China do, in fact, know how to use martial arts. I expected a movie about 40% better than what I came to watch. On the scale of personal involvement I was almost entirely untouched. It saddens me that this was such a letdown and that people seem to feel that it is still one of the best films they have seen of all time.

Saw the movie yesterday.... and the two best fight scenes are Zhang Ziyi in the teahouse, and Zhang Ziyi vs Michelle Yeoh in the Dojo. (am i the only one who laughed when she fell back with the large fighting staff?... heck, even Zhang Ziyi cracked a smile!)

I was surprised... every movie i see Chow Yun Fat in, he's shooting someone.. first time i saw him actually fight...
