Anybody see Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon?

She was cool, hated to see her go at the end. But I wanted more crouching tiger and a little less hidden dragon

Actually, I just now (5 minutes ago) got back from seeing it.
I wasn't to impressed by the 1st half of the movie.
All the flying, which is what it basically comes down to, kinda ruined it a little bit. And it was a little slow. Like a guy earlier stated, "more crouching tiger, less hidden dragon" would of helped the movie.
But let me say, where Zhang Ziyi and the other older Warrior Women sword fight in the "make shift" dojo is Un-freaking believeable!!! I was dumbfounded! That is one of the single best action sequences I have ever seen!!!! Bar-none!!!
Actually, all the fight scenes were pretty amazing, but that took the cake for me.
If you like Kung-fu, sub-titled movies, you are gonna luv this movie!!
Those damn women probably have Bruce Lee shaking in his grave (god rest his bad-ass soul)

Well the flying part is a part of asian culture it seems

cool movie...watched it over the Christmas weekend...
The women are definitely the stars of the movie.
As for the flying...it's just Chinese folklore...if Americans can have a flying Superman...us Chinese can have flying heroes too.

Actually, I think a lot of HK kung-fu movies plays the fighting sequence a little faster than normal. This way, you get the "fast" effect. It's still cool to watch though.

Actually, the idea in Chinese folklore is that SOME of these people are supposed to be able to fly, but others aren't - they just have this low gravity effect because they haven't mastered the art yet, and that includes the women in the movie.
However, in the movie they didn't look like they were using reduced gravity, but instead they looked like they were hung from cables and were just flailing their legs. Like a lot of wire work (but unlike the Matrix), it just looked kinda cheesy. For this very reason the man who choreographed the whole thing (and who also did the Matrix) was against all the wire work in the first place.
Now superman also looked cheesy, but hey, that was decades ago, and if those standards were used today, people would say it looked stupid (because it does).
CTHD was very good, but hugely overrated in the states. Check out swordsman II for a great action movie (choreographed by Yuen Woo Ping again, Iron Monkey or Once Upon a Time in China (Woo ping too, plus Yuen Biao and Jet Li). Now those are good recommendations...

why can't we just accept that fact that the creators of a story wanted people to fly? has imagination and creativity gone down the commercial toilet? Of course people love Castaway because it seemed to be "realistic" (like a man sitting on a bench for 3 hours produces the same sense of reality).
if a movie's realism is important to you, you just aren't mentally fit to watch them.

I think he meant that only masters could fly, which include women. I think the thing that bothered me with the flying was how it was done. Take off should have been more abrupt, like a really powerful jump kind of deal with more speed Otherwise it looks too much like puppets being dragged upwards.
Otherwise it looks too much like puppets being dragged upwards.Actually, i think what the kung-fu "fluing" is, is not really flying... the type of kung-fu they are supposed to possess is called "hing kung"... or "light kung-fu" , in essence they are supposed to be so light on their feet they can float and "walk on air" ... so he need to push-off or make a great lunging effort isn't sipposed to be needed... my 2 cents

Yes, the masters which only was Chow Yun Fat in this movie are supposedly able to almost fly. So for him to do superman routine isn't a problem.
However, Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Zi Yi in the movie were not at that level yet and were just light. It's not because they were women, but it's because they weren't fully trained yet or perhaps (in the case of Michelle Yeoh) didn't have the required innate skill. The implication was that Zhang Zi Yi DID have the skill but still couldn't because she hadn't been properly trained.
Under folklore Yeoh and Zhange are supposed to be able to jump great distances and run up walls, etc., but they aren't supposed to look like puppets hanging from a string as Zucchini said. Ie. I could handle it if they did fly, but the fact that they're hovering 6 inches over a roof but supposedly running on it just looks kind of odd. Probably the better look would be something like a person walking on the moon etc, but granted, that would be VERY hard to do at the speeds they were at.

flying... its a fantasy movie!!! i dont see why thats even an issue.
(people who are used to hong kong cinema are used to it, but i do know a few white folk who tried to "understand" the flying and everything. dont waste your time. Its just some really cool wirework like in a ton of other chinese films. In fact, its not really very good wirework compared to some other movies...)

I agree with your second statement. That's exactly my point. It's poor wirework. Bad wirework in Hong Kong movies has always irked me. I've always thought it looked dumb. But good wirework makes the movie fly. (OK sorry...
