Anybody running Vista on a 2900xt?

I'm thinking of upgrading to Vista but I'm worried that my 2900xt will always be running in 3D mode and thus require it to heat up and use its loud fan. Anybody know?

No.

It's inaudible above my current case fans/PSU at idle in Vista.
And i run Noctuas & a Corsair HX-520, meaning very quiet.

Under load, the HD 2900 XT is certainly not silent though, but if you game with headphones, it's tolerable, though not nearly as nice as the 8800 GTX.

Not at all.

I'm not sure exactly how ATi is doing it in Vista, but the card still runs @ 2D speeds unless you run a game, etc.

Whether 2D is actually now just a name for a lower clocked 3D speed, that i don't quite know or understand, but i can say that the card does not kick into full speed (& therefore ramp up fan speed) until games are launched.

Aero is 2D.

Aero uses the GPU more than non-aero. Thats the point of the post, does the extra usage cause it to run warm enough the fan is always going...

Awesome, thanks for the info.

On a side note, you have a 8800 gtx and a 2900xt? Niice

At the moment, yes.

It's so i can run SLIfire 😉

Again, the fan does not kick into a higher speed until games are run, as Aero really doesn't stress things nearly that much.
