I'm trying the demo out (15 hour download @ 56K - LOL), and the graphics look horrible. I try to switch 32-bit, but it doesn't seem to work.

I'm running an Athlon 700 and a GeForce DDr - surely I have the horsepower to run 800x600@32 bit???

Xerox Man, disable "detailed textures"...I believe that's the option at any rate. GeForce1/2 performance will increase dramatically. As for horrible graphics, I disagree. Yes, it's the Unreal engine but it looks dandy to me. There's also another performance optimization involving a new DLL or something. I haven't checked into it because, as yet, I haven't bought the game (just played the well-done demo).

I'm running it with the new dll that u ca d/l from http://www.deusex.com1024x768 detail textures and all the stuff on, 32bit color and the frame rates are decent. They prolly dont go above 30 but it's smove and i dont get any slowdowns.

I have a duron@1000 and gfddr, so i think that you should be able to run the game well.

Make sure you are running it in win98 or me cause this game is a do in win2k.

Jelly - the graphics look okay as far as detail, but the colors are awful . . . they seem to be stuck on 16-bit for me; I'll try the new DLL and see what happens.

If you want 32-bit color I think you have to edit the deusex.ini file, cause if you change it in-game it doesn´t make a difference. This is what my file looks like:

[WinDrv.WindowsClient]
WindowedViewportX=1024
WindowedViewportY=768
WindowedColorBits=32
FullscreenViewportX=1024
FullscreenViewportY=768
FullscreenColorBits=32

You have to change the FullscreenColorBits=32 value so it says 32 instead of 16.

Jelly was right on . . . disabling that texture thing allowed me to switch to 32-bit.

Xerox,
Ive been playing the game for about 2 weeks solid now,very cool game IMO.If you need help accessing the advanced menu,go here
http://www.tweak3d.com They helped me out when I needed to get my POS S4 card running right.Hope it helps ya.

P.S. If you ever edited Unreal or UT you will see the same menu here,its just a little harder to get to.

Peace

I've been playing for a couple of days. Games pretty good, but the graphics are dire - there's a burnt out car on one of the early levels, made up of maybe 6 polygons and a couple of textures - I was very impressed.

Also when the camera zooms in for conversations you see just how poor the character models are - look like pre-quake2 polygon count (might be just my jaded memory though).

While graphics don't make the game, it really annoys me that developers are still targeting very low spec machines. I'm kinda getting fed up with id releasing a sh*t hot engine, then seeing nothing particularly impressive until they bring out their next engine two years later. Hopefully the x-box will give pc developers a much needed kick up the a$$ & we'll see games targeted at mid-range pcs rather than the absolute lowest common denominator thats used now.

Xerox Man, good deal!

dee, Deus Ex was in development forever. They commited to the older Unreal engine a looooooooooong time ago and stuck with it. I doubt that engine will be in any future game.

But you're dead-on about developers (at the behest of publishers I'm sure) targeting low-spec machinery. It's gonna take forever to get all games using most of DX 8's features. And I doubt many FPSs will require the sheer horsepower of a GF2/V5-6000 anytime soon.

Unreal looks awesome IMO. Take a look at Wheel of Time, and you'll see one of the best textures and level design in any game! And you have to admit that UT has some nice models (although a bit limited on choices).

Dues Ex wasn't made to have "super de duper" graphics, but instead awesome gameplay. And i think they REALLY accomplished what they set out to do.

Unreal sure isn't dead yet. Can you say Duke4ever?

I think the Unreal engine games look great, especially with glide.

I think gameplay is killer!!!!!!!

I have GTS, runnin 10x7x16 with details on medium. Can't go high. Gonna try disabling detailed textures and turn on 32-bit color.

The game only runs well on Voodoo card. I'm running it on my Voodoo3 3000. It looks pretty good. This game is the greatest game I've ever played, I'm now totally addicted to it!

I'm about 90% of the way through it. Starting playing it around the beginning of August. There were some entire LEVELS which I played through at less than 20fps! (Average 12 to 18). And considering my system specs... it goes to show that the game had other redeeming qualities apart from very sh!tty performance on non-GLIDE cards.

BTW many of you claim that it runs fine on your 700+mhz CPU with a geforce... but you've only tried the demo! the size of the level in the demo is NOTHING compared to some levels in the full game... some of them are just MASSIVE... insane.

anyways the story is *great*, and Deus Ex is definitely this year's HALF-LIFE. So if you only buy one FPS this year, make sure it's Deus Ex!

It is a cool game, but it runs about 90FPS slower than Q3 on my machine. The thing is a monster on video cards.
Q3A 127 FPS
Deus EX 37 FPS

It isn't about your video card, Unreal in D3D is all CPU. My system isn't great in Dues Ex, and it is really fast. Turn off detail textures in graphics, and it will make it playable. 32bit does make a big difference in that game, a lot more than in UT.

I beat it yesterday, it was a great game, it took me about 18 hours. Only the 4th shooter I've bothered to play to the end (Doom 2, Goldeneye, and Half-Life are the others).

If you guys skip on this soley because of poor performance (which can you can fix, for the most part with a few settings on GeForce cards).....you're missing out on one of the best PC games of all time.

i've been playing it on an off for a about 3 weeks - i'm running in 640x480x32 - 16 Bit is too ugly.. but goddamn this game is serious - i need to play something with a sense of humour (Motocross Madness 2 comes to mind) for a while to get out of the 'deus ex' mood...

the tone is so damn heavy

The full version of deus ex is really cool. It *IS* a little slower paced than you typical FPS, thx in part to the RPG elements. I highly suggest going out and purchaseing the game. Boat loads of fun. Many ways of doing stuff. I might replay it real quick like while waiting for Homewold:Cataclysm and BG2.

As for the unreal engine, the only game with sh|tty a fps rate is this one. Every other unreal powered game runs fine on my current system as well as my "old" Pii 450. I really dig the engine. I really dig the Q3 engine even though the game is crap imho.
