I have the following:

AMD XP 2500 Barton OC to 3200+ and stable
1 GB DDR PC-3200
Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb

Will I be OK at 1024x768 with high quality?

and if not, what will be my limiting factor?

It occassionally freezes for just a split second when I enter a new area but other than that it's fine. Not sure if there is a way to get away from that freeze. Maybe taking it down to 800x600 will fix the problem but I'll have to try that later tonight when I get home.

Tom

The freeze between new area's is texture loads and other items transferring to the AGP card id imagine.

Assuming that's the problem, is there anyway to solve it short of replacing the card? Is it the 128MB or RAM instead of 256MB?

Thanks!

i have a 2500XP running @ 185x12, a Radeon 9800 Pro 256 Flashed->XT, 512mb PC3200 @ 185fsb. ASUS A7N8X.

I run at 1024x768 high detail pretty well. it stutters a lot in the beginning, but within 30 seconds or so its smooth. I also have mirc and aim running in the background also.....if that makes any difference. hope this helps...

It's just a lack of memory. :(

I have an XP2400+, 512MB PC2700, and the 9800 Pro, all stock, and the game is playable at 1280x1024 with medium detail settings (still looks pretty damned amazing). At 1024x768 High, it stuttered randomly, mainly when I opened doors, but in between doors it was playable.

How successful can I expect to be with the OC. I have a MSI 9800 Pro with a VGA Silencer Rev 3 installed.

XP2200 @ 2.0 (200x10)
512MB RAM
9800 Pro

1024x, Medium

XP2500 @ 2.4
512MB RAM
ti4400

800x, Medium

That's what I've tried. Looks pretty good even at 800x, though its probably cause I spend my time playing and not studying hig res screenshots of the game to boost ego.

I can't seem to tell the difference between medium and high, although I'm usually not standing still when playing either... Can anyone tell the difference during normal gameplay?

Been playing about an hour . . . no slowdowns yet! :)

My 9800Pro 256/256MB > XT is running at 10x7 HiQ and 8xAF/2xAA . . . everything 'on' (except v-synch) . . .
edit: one note - i had to DISable OverDrive - evidently the O/C from 411 to 418Mhz produces artifacting . . . no problem at "stock" XT speeds ;)

BTW, the game is kinda boring. :p

OTOH. Thief: Deadly Shadows just has "ordinary excellent" graphics but GAMEPLAY that is TOP-NOTCH . . . me, i'm still switching between the flashlight and the submachine gun . . . can't seem to find any duct tape. :p

Yee hah! Now I'm glad I got the 256. You have a VGA silencer on it?

so far almost 1/2 way through the game and I can still play it very comfortably on 1280x1024 resolution at the high setting.
havent even bothered with AA yes, no need so far really.

p4 3.06/ 1gb ram / 9800pro AIW / rest in sig

If youre having FPS trouble, see if your 9800Pro is one of the models that can be flashed and overclocked to 9800XT status. A few manufacturers (MSI, Sapphire) make all their 9800s using all the same parts, but load a different BIOS and underclock them.

So if you change the BIOS to XT, and clock it normally, its the exact same card as a XT, but much cheaper ;)

The speed is not too bad, though it does get down to 15 fps or so at times. Average is probably around 30-35 fps.

Hey is Doom 3 SMP aware like Quake 3 was? Maybe you can find a way to turn it on

Yeah I'm almost positive that Doom3 *does* use SMP. Some HyperThreading and SMP benchmarks would be really cool to see. Turn down the resolution and details to minimum and you'll get a great benchmark to compare w/ single CPU setups.

We just need to figure out what the console command is to enable SMP.

of course. :)

it ran too hot . . . occasionally over 80 C. :p Now it runs

ONE NOTE - i HAD to DISable OverDrive - artifacting shows up over 412Mhz core . . . :(

. . . but no worries, it plays great at stock XT speeds.. :)

The ole pro surprised me, better than I thought it would be mainly because of my slooow fsb 266.
No artifacts at all like some are reporting. Smooth transitions going through doors.

XP2400+ 1 gig pc2100
His iceQ 9800p no oc of anything
Run High 800x600 very smooth
Going to 1024x768 at medium is pretty much same numbers. I prefer the high with afx8 and seems smoother.
Fraps from ingame action area: High 800x600
Frames: 10486 - Time: 240252ms - Avg: 43.645 - Min: 16 - Max: 65
