It seems interesting but got loads of bad reviews on release. Been over a year and no one is saying its gotten better.

I put several days into it. It gets repetitive very quickly. If you've played the rifts in Rift, then you've played 80% of Defiance's end game content and that's not an exaggeration. When you finish the seasonal storylines, you're about rank 1000-1200 or so out of 5000. The rest of the game is nothing but the same rifts and instances over and over.

Also, the gameplay, weaponry, and gadgets are basically ripped straight out of Borderlands.

It's the laziest developed game I've ever played.

OK, it took all night but I finally downloaded it.

Was not impressed. Had some nice ideas but all poorly executed. Lag is so horrible I cant hit anything, kill anything, reload, loot goodies, or even get around the map safely.

The problem is its over a year old and they still havent fixed anything, according to reviews by early adopters.

Firefall is way better.

ouch! that's like saying ripping out a tooth with a pliers is way better then a hammer.
Though I must admit i haven't played Firefall since maybe 6 months ago, has it gotten so massive a fix its fun now?

Only played like 12 levels of defiance a while back. Thought it was ok, but hadn't done very much with the game. So while I enjoyed the intro levels, I can't really give you a good perspective on how the game is overall. Only reason I quit was because new games came out I was interested more in and so were friends. With MMO's I tend to go where the crowd of my friends/guild goes usually.

Played more today.

Characters are uninspired. You can only have one ability at a time. Weapons mostly feel generic. Missions get VERY repetitive. Combat is almost impossible because of the lag.

Do not like.
Shame too, because it has a good story.

Oh, and tried jumping back into Far Cry 2.
REALLY did not like.
It takes a lot of effort just to chase down a single diamond, and you need about 25 of them for anything good.
Enemies respawn too much for a sandbox game (similar complaint with Red Faction Guerrilla) and it makes the whole experience a monotonous drudge as opposed to a fun experience.

These companies need to learn something from Bethesda about the sandbox concept. It needs to be huge, open, and full of many different activities.

Firefall is basically Borderlands the MMO with a Mass Effect style inventory system, Halo-esque physics, and a huge open world with random dynamic events going off everywhere.

Firefall is bleh. Perpetual beta. It is just thumping and running around from the same event from one place to the next and hoping not to only get the tail end of it.

Firefall is ok for a time waster for a few minutes with some friends, but nothing long lasting.

those are the same complaints about any MMO "it's too repetitive" "you just do the same type of jobs over and over"

you can say the same thing about Borderlands games which are like 90+ on metacritic

what about a linear shooter, all you do is go from room to room shooting enemies, a lot of those games dont have any upgrades or leveling up at all, you literally just paint targets with a gun and move on to next room

video games are repetitive

Largely, yes. However, that repetition can be sugar coated with good story (which neither firefall nor defiance have), good gameplay (which neither have), replayability (which neither have), innovation (which neither have), and several other topics... which neither have.
