Baldur's Gate has horrible graphics by today's standards. 640x480, and half of the screen is covered by the interface.

It's not always about graphics.

Yeah but it's painful to try to play it, at least on a 19" monitor. It would be great at 1280x960.

BG1 was 640X480. BG2 officially supported 800X600 and that could be overridden to bump it up to 1024X728.
1 had some issues, especially with travel. You spent a lot of time slogging through empty maps when moving from place to place. That and the resolution problem makes 1 a game only for the more hardcore. If you want you can skip one and just play 2 with the expansion. That will still offer a huge, long game and you won't feel like you've missed much.
If you like hack and slash, also play the Icewind Dale games. They were more combat oriented where BG is story-driven. The same resolution warning applies, IWD 1 was 640X480 only, but IWD 2 offered 800X600 officially supported with much higher resolutions possible by overriding it.
