I know this gets quite a bit of talk on anandtech, but i dont know who actually has one

If you do, how would you go about browsing through all your mp3s. How would you skip through folders and songs?

I demoed the Pioneer 5500MP today, and decided against purchasing solely because the folders were called Fx (x being a number) and the tracks were numerical... as in the unit wouldn't read the ID3 tag UNTIL you have selected a song... so you are essentially browsing BLINDLY

I liked the Alpine 9807, despite being uglier and having far less features, solely because it stores all the disc info on a cache to allow you to very quickly browse through all the songs. also, it amazingly read ALL of my super scratched up CDs. Even my portable mp3 player, computer, and every other head unit I tested was not able to read the very same CDs.

So the last contestant is the JVC unit... How has it dealt with your CDs..and how does it browse through files? I really really like its look (over the archaic Alpine) and its advantages in features... (something the Alpine really lacks)

You have to use the control to do it easily just going to root and opening directories and etc...It can be done on the head but it's a pain in the ass. I LOVE THIS DECK. The station preset buttons can also be used as shortcuts to folders. I have mine named 01 - Beatles and when I hit it, it opens just beatles song(all that's in the folder) Does that help?

Sure ya can, You'd only have 10 songs in each preset if you put 120 songs on a disc...I think it's managable.

Okay this is how it works. On the top of the deck there are 6 buttons labeled 01 02 03 04 05 06

On your MP3 cds... you create 6 seperate folders named 01 02 03 04 05 06 and split your mp3 collection equally over the folders

When the MP3 disc is inserted into the cd player, you can push any of the 6 folders and it will jump instantly to the corresponding folder with a second lag at the most. This is such a cool and easy feature.

Hope it helps.

Well, that is true. I didn't want to confuse him. I wanted to make it very simple... :p
