I'm going to be in frankfurt in early january, and I have about an 11 hour layover in the frankfurt airport. Any suggestions as to what to do? Or should I just stay in the airport? thanks.

Frankfurt, Germany? In January? Brrrr....

Nah, with 11 hours you could 1) Put your bags in a locker, and 2) Jump on an S-Bahn and head towards the Hauptbahnhof (Hbf).

Take the train from the airport to the main station (bahnhof) in frankfurt. Red light district is within walking distance (10-15 min) from there.

If you arrive on a Sunday, forget about shopping!

Take a look at this subway map.

As you can see, the airport (Flughafen) is on the S8/S9 lines. I'd buy a Tageskarte (day ticket) at the airport and take the S8 (Richtung Hanau) to Hauptwache, two stops beyond the Hauptbahnhof. There you can find all sorts of shopping an eating opportunities.

Nah, the temperature is OK. The final destination is Russia! Could you be a bit more specific on the S-Bahn and Hauptbahnhof? Ya spreuchen nein Deutsche.

EDIT: Guess you were more specific already! Thanks so much!

take a cab to the the Irish pub in franfurt, its not far from the red light district. awesome place and has real guiness on tap. I spent a few nights there getting trashed with some buddies when i was stationed in germany.

If you want to be more daring and the weather is nice (for January), take the S-Bahn to the Hauptbahnhof then buy a round-trip train ticket to Heidelberg Hbf. It's about a 50 minute train ride. The ticket should cost around 23,00?.

You can find train schedules by using www.bahn.de.

BTW, the red light district ain't all that great!

Edit: I personally would have no trouble going to Heidelberg, stay there for 3 or 4 hours, then get back to the airport with time to spare...if you have 11 hours to mess around.

Too many drunk tourists there! But yeah, it's directly across the street from the front entrance of the Hauptbahnhof.

Why drink sh!tty Guiness when you have like 1000 German beers on tap throughout the city? While in Germany, enjoy German beer and German culture!

Heidelberg trip is a good suggestion, but you'll have to walk a lot outside, and at some point, it will rain...

The airport sucks, too crowded, and they were remodeling and there were few places to sit down, some months ago.

 That is what a few of my friends and I did when we were there (studying abroad). The class was on a trip to the world bank, and I was BORED out of my mind there. Economics just doesn't interest me. So a few of us skipped out and made the heidelberg trip. Nice place, neat buildings and quite a few shops.
