i was assigned there for work for 4 months, not much to do. wouldn't want to live there, but if you are raising a family I'd say its better than LA.

Thanks all for the info, I will probably have to go there on business for a few weeks sometime later this year. Wife went there for a few days to do some lobbying last year but didn?t have the chance to look around. At least now I have some clue as to where to look if I ever do decide to move there.

I lived there up until moving out for college. I'm located in Orange County now, so not too far from LA. I would say that while each has unique qualities they're pretty much the same. When I lived in Sacramento I lived in both Fair Oaks and Foothill Farms. There are some really nice areas (Fair Oaks, Carmichael, Folsom) and then there are some average areas (Citrus Heights, Foothill Farms). Granted you'll find nice houses/neighborhoods as well as bad in all areas.

I haven't lived in Orange County long enough to decide where I'd want to live between the two, but based on just the people, I'd go with Sacramento.

Schools in Sacramento have just consolidated into a massive district. Administrative and Staff shakeouts have yet to occur.
Historically, there are some areas to avoid, in South Sacramento/ Elk Grove, and in Del Paso Heights.
Some would say avoid Rio Linda, yet their graduation and college placement rates belie the perception of the neighborhood (semi - rural).

Citrus Heights, Orangevale, Folsom, El Dorado Hills are all new municipalities within the greater Sacramento County that will have decent schools and a wide variety of home buying options.

The Basic Mindset of this sleepy little cow town at the junction of two great rivers (once water, now asphalt) is one of little town with delusions of granduer.
The constant influx of East Coasters, and SoCal'rs here for Governmental and then by extension, Big Business reasons has assured that a certain level of sophistication has occured, but by and large, the prevailing POV is not unlike Midwestern American Farming Community that has had the Big Mill ( Air Force bases) move away.

People still come here thinking they can strike gold, and you can, you simply need to accept that you will need to move a LOT of rock before that happens.
Come to Folsom, I'll show you rock that's been moved in search of real gold.

El Dorado Hills isnt in Sac County.

All Said if you if you Dont mind a commute, Roseville or Folsom are your best Bets. Folsom's largest employer is Intel (by FAR) and Roseville has everything you could EVER want. If you dont want a commute, Natomas (where I live) is 5-10 minutes from downtown.
