Well, I know a lot of people play it but what do you think of it?
Just picked up a copy at BB for $5 so I didnt get hurt too bad :D

So far My fav is "Half-Life". A litle slower to play and more sniping opportinities, I guess.

What do you think?

Unreal was fun. Half-Life was great until that stupid end-alien level.

Good pick up.

Nice to see you around!!! Been hiding lately? ;)

Unreal was a fun game 3 years ago ;). But it definitely had the best storyline and single player gameplay at the time until Half-Life came out a few months after.

I agree that Half-Life was great until the end.

Unreal is an oldie, but it was the Daddy to Unreal Tournament...Pretty graphics, but OLD in today's Gaming world.

Tsk, tsk...Come on MAX! I KNOW you've been spending A LOT of time with that new DVD player you got, but ya gotta get up to speed with the Games man! ;)

All the 'CS' threads and people yapping about getting into 'Neo's server', the CS stands for Counter Strike and it's a mod for Half-Life. I haven't gotten on the scene with it yet, but the amount of fanatacism with it is impressive.

I think buying Unreal Tournament was the best $20 I've ever spent on a video game. I don't know about Unreal but I know you can sometimes find UT for around $10.

Unreal was cool, the only fun part was the graphics. The storyline was stoopid and so weren't the battles (except for some of the scripted sequences!). Multiplayer was cool too, but the netcode blew unfortunaterly

TRP-

Nice that someone noticed Ive been a litle absent lately. A nice compliment. Thanks. Been busy with a few family problems but not serious, just away from the computer. Another week or so and Ill be back at full steam.

Namuna-

Yeah, that DVD has been a real time and money killer :D. Ive been "sick" but Im much better now.

Have to get in on the CS rage myself. Really hate to play on line with only a 56k modem though.

Have Quake Areana and Unreal Tournament but for $5 couldnt pass up Unreal. Seems kind of boring and the monsters suck but the graphics are nice.

So much computer, so little time.

Unreal is one of the best single player FPS games I've ever played. ** INCOMING LIST ** :)

  • Graphics - There's no denial possible here. The Unreal engine is awesome. Lighting, texturing, polygons, animations, algorithmic textures (sparkling water, fire, sparks), very cool eye candy for fantastic environments. That plus some very talented level makers equals a fantastic visual treat.
  • Sound - The 3D sound support, especially EAX environmental effects, are a great asset of Unreal. The level designers made such good use of ambient sound effects that the graphics and sound seemed to merge, creating a beautiful play environment.
  • Music - Sweet. Unreal's music is fanatically cool. I have every umx from the game encoded to MP3 in my music collection. The music was far less of a separate, novelty element (ala Quake][) and more like an integrated piece of the environment. The combination of graphics, ambient sound, and music in Unreal is enough to cause me to pause for moment in the game and look around, just admiring and exploring the rich environment.
  • Enemy AI - A huge step up from the standard "go straight to the player with huge gun" drones of previous shooters, where a foe's difficulty was measured in its weapon strength, Unreal's baddies were a serious challenge. The common Skaarj's most powerful attack is a melee, but they dodge/weave/jump/dash around the level so well you'll have to be quick on your feet, alert to your footing, and a damned good shot to stop them.
  • Storyline - Though the basic "why am I here" story to Unreal was rather basic, all throughout the game, other interesting substories develop. If you actually read the translated messages you encounter, you get an idea of "what happened here". Finding personal logs on dead bodies gives clues to their deaths and near-future dangers to you. You get an idea of the Unreal world, the enslavement of the Nali by the Skaarj, the uneasy business relationship between the Skaarj and Krall, the logs of search party members out to find a friend, then levels later in the game you find that person's body and their log, and so on.
  • Multiplayer bots - You think Unreal Tournament's bots are intelligent? The original Unreal bots are the basis for them! It's true that the early network code left much to be desired (it's much better in the final version), but playing against bots was no less fun that it is in UT.
  • Spiffyness - The game just RULEZ.
Thank you for your time. :)
[edit] Almost forgot. If you look online, you'll still see a few people playing CoOp games! One of my favorite time-wasting activities is to go online and play a few levels of a CoOp game. The single player mode is that good. People are still playing CoOp.

J/K :D

I can see your point, though. All you said is true.

Unreal was badass...environment wise (the sky was an excellent improvement) and musically.

The gameplay was kinda "ho-hum" but it sure was pretty.

Now, if only they can combine the eye-candy of Unreal and Unreal Tournament with the gameplay of Half-Life...

I like unreal more than half life. The story line to half life was spectacular but in typical Sierra fashion is caused me too many headaches when installing and crashed out my friend's computer as well. He is extremely hesitant now to try any Sierra product.....

I have been playing Unreal for almost half a year in single player mode and still have not made it thru the levels... (I don't get as much time as I'd like to play, or I suck too much to move thru quickly......)

I found it very enjoyable to play multiplayer against friends and the first time I saw a baddie get his head severed by that razorjack blade I squealed with delight !!

The beginning of Unreal is nowhere near as exciting as half life but once i got the hang of it, I was sucked in......

(note: it took me 2 and a half years to complete quake...... :Q )
