It's a SO-DIMM slot, the slot that Laptop RAM uses, however, on desktop/workstation/server boards, it is often used for specialized daughter-boards.

I'm wondering if it is to upgrade the video memory of the integrated graphics. I see an ATI Rage 3D chip and two memory chips bracketing the mystery slot.

Yeah that would be pretty cool. The onboard memory is only 2MB. Wheres the cheapest place to get a stick to put in there to test it?

Yes, that's probably a graphics RAM expansion slot. Generic SODIMMs won't work, you'll probably need the same ones used on the ATI Xpert@work/play series cards.

I can guarantee you that that is a video ram expansion slot. Many old PCI and AGP cards from that era had tham, and so did the original iMacs.

Sweet. Is it possible to find the chips these days?
Would it allow me to run higher color depth? It won't allow 32bit color above 800x600. Maybe due to the 2MB memory?
