hi ... i am a newbee at win 2000 even tho i installed it 3 times... well this time its going better... anyways... any one know how to make the start up items in 2000 not start up ??? any comments would be appreciated... thanks... 🙂

Either in the Startup Folder, or in the Registry at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Many items in Windows 2000 also start as Services, you would have to look in the Services Control Panel for those.

If you're new to the NT platform, I would suggest doing some web searches for Services and see if you can find some good books or something. 🙂

Startup Control Panel, freeware from Mike Lin, is an excellent means of temporarily or permanently enabling / disabling / deleting non-service startup items in NT 4 or W2K. It's a lot more elegant and convenient that using the registry editor. And, as has been mentioned already, the Services applet in the Administrative Tools group is the central way to control the starting conditions for services. However, it's not a good idea to go in there and just start turning services off. Learn what a service is and what it does before you turn it off. And, in any case, it's usually better to just set it to manual rather than to disable it. Sometimes you'll have a hard time re-enabling a service that has been disabled, but re-enabling one that has merely been set to manual works easily.

Hope this helps.

BTW, why have you installed W2K so many times? Problems, multiple machines, or just practice?

Regards,
Jim

I've read of some people that would just get a copy of msconfig from a windows 98 box and then run it in win2k. Another option is to download a program called startup cop. You can find it at www.download.com. I use it and it works great.

Follow the link in jaywallen's post and install Startup Control Panel. It's a breeze to use and the best program out there for what you want.

Startup control Panel as stated above is by far the best thing out there, no install needed, just run the exe and you can do everything
