A friend of mine was doing it for a while until layoffs came due to the slowdown and he was low man on the totem pole. He liked it, but I couldn't see him doing it for a long time. The guy has a master's degree in mathematics.

That's what got me thinking. If a brain dead idiot can operate a train, why can't I?
Might be a nice change of pace for a while.

How many engineers are needed though? I think the odds of scoring that position would be fairly low. Once people get with the railroad, they stay until they retire. Not much turnaround....

Do they still need the "chip on his shoulder" brakemen?

The general qualifications which must be met before a man or woman becomes eligible for the position of locomotive engineer are:

At least 21 years of age.
Minimum education of high school or equivalent.
Good physical condition with excellent hearing and eyesight.
Completion of locomotive engineer training.
Have an IQ less than or equal to your shoe size.

YOU QUALIFY!

Seems like an okay job.
Discuss. I would like to know more.

My cousin is a conductor for CSX in western Pa and maryland.
he went to school for a year, engineer school is an additional year which he will do eventually. Engineers are almost exclusively hired by seniority from the conductor group.
