I have been thinking of actually taking my diagnosis and getting adderall xr. Are they really all they are cracked up to be for people with ADHD inattentive type? What can the average user expect?
Adderall, for the people it is truly designed for (as a prescription stimulant to treat ADHD), brings the user down, calms them down and helps them focus. It does not act like "speed" for such a user because their body chemistry actually is rather screwed up, hence the ADHD.
ADHD can be caused by a few different chemical imbalances, some treatable by other means, even lifestyle and nutrition changes. So even if you have a diagnosis and get a prescription for it, it may act exactly like an amphetamine
should react in your body: make you very amped up, "ready to go", and it may or may not lead to increased ability to focus and/or an increased attention span.
Other ADHD/ADD medications are more effective for different people, and you may be best off with a non-stimulant med like Strattera. (something like Provigil/modafinil, or armodafinil, MAY be effective, but it's nearly impossible to get it prescribed for such off-label usage)
You may LIKE Adderall XR - but you'll know if it's truly the BEST when it comes to treating your symptoms. If it doesn't slow you down a bit, it's pretty damn hard NOT to like. If you have to study, it can be pretty damn useful.
But instead of helping, it can lessen impulsive behavior control, and it can reduce attention span. It may in fact help in both fronts and speed you up - sort of a win/win.
Just don't overuse it even if it's everything you hoped for and more. As an adult, it may not cause neurological changes in your brain (for better or worse), but you may develop tolerance with regular use.
The jury is really still out on the long-term use of actual stimulants for treatment of such diseases; they really are not that positive it is not causing more damage in the long-run, at least when prescribed to pre-teens and teenagers, where the brain is still in the full-steam-ahead development cycle.
