what's the general rule of thumb for hitting the ball with english? should i hit the top, bottom, right, or left of the ball?

always try to hit the center. that will usually give you the best shot. when you start messing with english, the little lines that show you where the ball will travel go askew.

btw, up for a game?

well, when i hit it center on the ball, it sometimes hit the corner of the pocket. I think with a little english, the ball would spin into the pocket.

I played a ton of games for like 2 weeks straight last year. At first, I thought the game was quite interesting because it's a good simulation for such a primitive app.

I got tired of it before long because:
  • I *hate* slop
  • People who I could work over 95 times out of 100 in a real game could beat me
  • It's not 9-ball
  • A lot of people cheat to win
  • The points system was stupid.. people with high points would be scared to play you. People with low points want to steal your points (which I wouldn't mind if it wasn't skewed, and if it was a skill game)
Essentially, it's no fun for me without being a skill game.

As an example, the best player I ran into I struggled to play break-even pool against (played maybe 6 racks) and his rating was something in the low 1300s.

Any other good Yahoo games that involve skill or acquired knowledge/thought?

Try the virtual pool series if your into pool on the pc. The latest is virtual pool 3. There are online tournaments and stuff that are pretty serious.

how the hell do you cheat in Yahoo Pool? I have been accused of it, but heck if I know how. Is there a bot for it?

I would like to know as well. I always play a timed game because I hate people that take a long @$$ time to shoot. The dumb rookies always say I'm cheating because they don't know it's timed.

The only english trick that ever works for me is if you want to hit a ball in that's sitting against the rail.

If you hit it straight on, the ball will come off the rail at an angle, but if you hit it with high english(move the dot to the top of the english thing) the ball on the rail will travel down the rail into the pocket.
~Voila

You cheat if you use a ruler to line up the shots.

That's why n00bs can rule the game.. they have absolutely no strategy, but they never miss a shot.

Timed games can help limit cheating, but not eliminate it.

To answer the original question, english isn't meant to alter the trajectory/spin of the object ball. It's primarily used to control what happens to the cue ball after it strikes the object ball. It has some effect on the object ball, but the answer to that question is complex, situation-dependent.

When a very good player is on his game, he's said to have the cue ball "on a string," controlling where it goes at will.

And that's the fundamental flaw of Yahoo pool.. most of the high-point players have no concept of strategy or setups. They just knock down straight shot after straight shot w/ a ruler.

If you ever watch competitive 9-ball on ESPN (I know this is pro-level), notice how all but the last shot are usually not straight shots.

Pros do this on purpose.. they need an angle on the shot to control where the cue ball ends up.

English in Yahoo Pool works similarly to real life, except that it's a simplified model.
