I live and work in Montgomery County. It's quite expensive to live in Montgomery County unless you want something really crappy. The housing market is just insane. A lot of people I work with commute from further out. Either towards the east or north. Unfortunately traffic sucks and 1 hour commutes to work are not uncommon. I would definitely look north like in Frederick. Realtor.com would be a good place to start.

Already looking at realtor.com - houses are averaging between 250k and 325k. :(

Single? Where are these houses and how old?

Single what? Floor? The ages all ranged. Just put in Baltimore, MD on realtor.com and you'll see. The Baltimore search seems to include all of the surrounding towns.

missed this from before, but reviving it... hopefully the OP is still looking into MD...

I've lived in MD since i was 6 months old and it's great here.. So far as jobs, for IT you are definitly looking at northern VA, DC, bethesda, rockville, and maybe columbia... You can always find affordable hoousing. I live in a safe neighborhood in a nice 2 bedroom apartment that is just outside the beltway (about a 20 minute drive to NW DC one way, and 20 minutes to Columbia the other) in Silver Spring, and I'm only paying 1100 a month. Unfortunately, IT joba can be very hard to find, depending on your specific field... for project manager type stuff, a security clearance helps a lot.

I live in Montgomery County, the most expensive of the lot, on the border of Virginia and DC.
I live in rockville more specifically, its somewhat of a hub, along with Bethesda. I live on the Rockville/Bethesda border (off Old Georgetown Rd and Rockville Pike, if anyone cares..)

ALL of the jobs are here, its great, we have MASSIVE government contracters, but security clearance is a must... work for Boeing, Lockheed Martin, or any of the other dozen big names :)

real estate is expensive, you can try to live in Gaithersburg, then its maybe 10 minutes down I-270 (called the Technology Corrider by the way) to the beltway (Lockheed Martin is right at the spur) around DC, and from there you can get anywhere.

Montgomery County is def. the best place to live. I'd watch out for Frederick or the rural areas if you are a minority.

I live in Baltimore City. There's not a whole boatload of IT jobs for the OP here. Stick to DC (Montgomery County, Rockville, Silver Spring, etc) rather than Baltimore.

Btw, real estate in downtown Baltimore City is a joke as well. I was astonished at how much our house sold for. As soon as the guy got done signing the paperwork I felt like jumping up and yelling AHA SUCKER!!! :)

I wouldn't agree that you need to watch out for rural area is you are a minority... i haven't come across a whole lot of prejudice in md... there are pockets, just like anywhere else, but for the most part it seems ok. Frederick is a beautiful place to live, but it's a bit far out for DC... for rockville work it should be fine. Montgomery County (where I live too) is pretty much great. If you are afraid of a little diversity, then I'd stick to suburban areas as my neighborhood is about 50% white, 20% black and 20% indian (jst my guesses from wandering about town). Also, if you love crack and getting shot at, then PG county is a good place for you. That's where I go to school (UMCP). Over the summer a student got shot in the butt while walking around campus. Of course for some reason he was walking around alone after midnight.

Somewhere or other there is a really good neighborhood guide... I don't remember much, except that it descies Takoma Park as Hippy Haven, which is pretty much true. If you are looking to live IN the city, there are still areas of NW that are "affordable" (i.e. not as nice as the rest), but which are getting better every day.

All in all, I'd reccommend DC... if nothing else it sounds impressive to tell a foreigner that you live in DC. :p

Baltimore city is very cheap to live in. I rented out a house with 4 other friends for $1200 a month, thats $240 a month per person. But the house was kinda crappy :) ok for college though.

I live in Frederick, no IT housing is outrageous, best bet to live in like Hagerstown or Sounthern PA and commute to DC or Baltimore

I live in Alexandria, VA. I do NOT have a degree. I have an A+ cert but that is it. I get paid 65k a year in an entry level position.

Also, do not, i repeat DO NOT move to Prince George County.

I want your job...

heh tell me bout it, i have a CS degree and didn't make nearly that much as my starting salary at my entry level position.

but i think in the not too distant future I'll be close to that.

Four years in the military does wonders to your resume.

I agree completely. I did 5 years in the Army, have no degree and made $72k right out of the Army doing help desk just because I have a clearance.
