I am still in school and I live with my parents. We are in Columbia in the middle of Baltimore and DC.

If you want to work in Baltimore you can look look in the Towson/Perry Hall areas which are considered to be Northern Baltimore County. I attend Towson University and I really like the Towson area. I am currently renting in the Perry Hall area which is where I grew up and I am trying to find a house right now. It is very competitive right now. People are overpaying by 10- 20k for some of the homes here. Stay away from Rosedale. I almost forgot, don't forget to check out the white marsh area as well. Good Luck.

Why stay away from Rosedale?

HAHAHA no.

Just no. Northern Baltimore County is north of Shawan road. It's defining characteristics are randomly placed farms, overpriced mansions and one single high school servicing an area the size of the rest of the county combined.

Towson/Perry Hall is lower-mid Baltimore County. Of course, when you consider that there is a seperatist movement up here, you guys may very well one day be north Baltimore County.

It can be VERY expensive to live in Maryland, it really depends on which city and county. Prices in DC and Montgomery County are insane. It's an okay place to live but it can be too humid in the summer and we can have some nasty winters. I'd prefer more mild weather year round.

I'm beginning to think maybe there is no way I can afford to move there, since I'm currently working in an area where I can buy a decent house for a 1/3 of the cost, and my salary reflects that. Spending lots of time at realtor.com today...

Maybe I should just keep the wife here, drive back on weekends. Sleep out of my car.

That's sounds a little harsh so good luck. You're not paid well enough here to account for the living even if you are paid more then most places. You will need to make at least 150K if more to be able to afford to buy a home and not one of those interest only loans.

150k? Maybe in the DC/Baltimore area. But further away it's not that bad. My friend gets 65k a year and has a nice 5 bedroom in Fredricksburg, VA.

I was talking about a combined salary of a husand and a wife and around the beltway. You can live further away but there's no BestBuy or CompUSA for miles... hehe.

I've lived in Montgomery County all my life and it's a great place. I'm planning to live here pretty much the rest of my life unless it starts getting ghetto. As far as not having much to do is really depends on what your definition of fun is. There's plenty of clubs in DC and Baltimore. Besthesda's bars are not the bad either.

Do you like living in Maryland?

I grew up in Montgomery County. I really do like it there.... but its reallly, really, REALLY boring. I suppose if you're married it isn't that bad. But there really isn't that much to do.

Dude are you crazy? There is a lot of crap to do. I guess its where you lived in montgomery county. I live like 2 mins from DC, where there is a great deal of nightlife and stuff to do. however, i am sick of doing it and want to get out of this area :)

Dude are you crazy? I live in NYC now. Compare NYC to DC and MD. The restaurants cannot compare. The nightlife isn't even close

NY compared to New Orleans... You'll have lots more to do for excitement.

I'm not really into excitement and nightlife stuff. I prefer to live in a relaxed countryside.

So like I said before, MD is a very nice, quiet, surburban place.

are you saying that $250K is affordable for you? if so, swinging a decent place a county or two away from Baltimore or DC is possible. do you have a security clearance?

Good news for you, I think. You can definitely find a ton of places to live. Montgomery County alone you could try Damascus, Poolesville, Darnestown, The Boyds, so many more. Pretty much all of northern Montgomery County. I don't know how the prices there compare to Bethesda and Rockville type areas, but they are probably cheaper.

I think you said you are working in Baltimore? If so you may want somwhere closer like Howard County or Anne Arundel county.

Anyway, I've lived in Mont. Co. my whole life. I just graduated from school so I haven't really done any looking so I can't help you on terms of pricing and whatnot, but I can definitely recommend areas to you or point you in places to get info if you want.

I live and work in Montgomery County. It's quite expensive to live in Montgomery County unless you want something really crappy. The housing market is just insane. A lot of people I work with commute from further out. Either towards the east or north. Unfortunately traffic sucks and 1 hour commutes to work are not uncommon. I would definitely look north like in Frederick. Realtor.com would be a good place to start.

Not working there yet, but I did apply at a company and am waiting to hear back. So this isn't a sure thing yet.

Already looking at realtor.com - houses are averaging between 250k and 325k. :(
