For the past six months the family cat has been living with me at my house. I share a townhouse with three other students. The cat seemed to take well to his new surroundings, but he frequently walks about the house crying. This behaviour almost always occurs when I return from work, feed him, he uses the litter box, and then I go upstairs to my room.

The cat seems to prefer sitting in the living room, which is seldom occupied and is almost always quiet. The cat is social and likes the company of people, and when I hear him crying I bring him up to my room, but he always cleans himself and then leaves. If he's crying because he's lonely, why does he leave my room? I don't have the time nor the inclination to constantly entertain the cat. What can I do to make him happier?

i know older cats tend to do it. my dad's 16 year old cat did that for a couple years before she died, now my 12 year old cat is starting to do it. eventually they'll stop once they find you.

He's nearly twelve, and having another cat is out of the question.

Thing is, I occassionaly leave the cat with my parents for a week at a time and he's fine.

he's bored and needs something to do.

Small toys or maybe some treats. Make sure he has fresh water and food, very clean litter box.

Sometimes they'll cry when something isn't right.

Was he an outdoor cat before? Maybe he just wants to go outside??

My old roommate and I had a cat that was in indoor cat, and he would always try and trick us and get outside. But what was really cool and funny was that whenever the cat did get outside, he would just run out into the grass and lay down. We postulated that he was always overwhelmed by how "big" the outside was compared to our apartment :)

He's probably bored or wants attention. Cats are little drama queens. :D

My wife and I have 3 cats and the middle cat (a 4 year old female) now and then will start crying really loudly until we pay attention to her. Get him some toys to play with and try to spend more time with him.

I play with him on occasion, but as I said, I don't have time to constantly entertain him. He's always got access to food, and water. I leave a fresh bowl of water and dry food every day. His litter box is cleaned daily and completely emptied and scrubbed once a week. He's indoor/outdoor, but honestly, he wouldn't miss the outside if I never let him out again.

if you don't have the time for him, why keep him? let your parents have him.

That's what I'm thinking. It sounds like you're doing what's necessary to take care of his needs as far as food and such are concerned, but he probably wants more attention from you than you're able or willing to give him.

i've found some cats just like to make noise, i have a older cat (15 years) and he always meows when you pet him or talk to him and many times just for the heck of it. i think he likes to hear his echo in my basement. goofy cat, but i do have another cat that keeps him company he's only 2 years old and never meows at anything unless he's hungry or watching a bird out the window

They're good with onions, fava beans and a nice Chianti.

No cat-related thread on ATOT is complete without another rendition of that joke, evidently.
