LOL.. yeah i know-- i'm trying to find some more out about the painting though-- I know it has to do with the story where judas kissed jesus,.. but was also betraying him (i know nothing about the bible)

i've looked through google and gotten some stuff---

mainly i'm comparing that picture to the one here Giotto "Kiss of Judas" Just wondering if anybody could offer any extra help or point me in a direction better than just "search on google" :)

Well, as the title implies, it's the betrayal of Christ by his apostle Judas Iscariot in the Garden of Gethsemane. Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss, thus identifying him to the Romans. You can see Peter losing his temper and cutting off Malchus' ear.

To tell you the truth there's alot of backstory so you might just want to read the passage itself.

a few things i can tell about this painting from my knowledge:

1) judas kissed jesus to identify him to the soldiers. "betrayed with a kiss."
2) the guy on the left with the knife is peter, he cut one of the soldiers' ears off trying to defend jesus but jesus put the ear back on the soldier
3) i think he was betrayed for 30 silver pieces
4) the guys on the right with the halos are the apostles running in fear

i think most of that should be right, its been awhile since catholic school

The painting, as said in the previous posts, depicts Judas' betrayal of Christ. Peter is the man with the knife and the rest of the Apostles are distinguished by the halos above their heads.
This painting is in the typical baroque style. Many Italian, French and Spanish paintings in the baroque style depict biblical events such as this.
You may want to compare this particular piece with some of Caravaggio's and Boccocio's works from the same period, dealing with the same subject matter.
Make sure you make a distinct contrast/comparison between the various artists' use of the elements of design: line, shape/form, color, texture, light/shadow, etc. Point out the differences in biblical representations- the use of chirascuro perhaps defining the lightness and darkness between Christ and Judas. Are the paintings realistic or romantic?
Good luck!
