Anybody here have their PhD?

How hard was it to get? I have heard that the workload remains constant, and not necessarily harder. Kind of like in high school, the workload progressively got harder and harder, but only after you begin to learn the concepts.

I want to get my PhD before my 10 year high school reunion (I'm graduating today, so I have some time). Being a Doctor would be so awesome, and to flaunt it in front of all those popular kids who now work at a car dealer.

Anyway, I don't know what to get mine in though. I'm going into Purdue as an undergraduate of Computer Science, and then hopefully I will transfer somewhere to California and continue studying there with a minor in Business Administration. Afterwards, I would like to get my MBA and then receive my Ph.D afterwards. Any suggestions?

Yes I have been attending skool since 18 and 12 and yes I have mY PHd.. ( b/c it is Piled Higher and Deeper

I have a Ph.D in Chemistry. It took five yrs. The first year was courses and teaching, the second yr was the start of the research project and candidacy exams and yrs 3-5 were pure research followed by a written disseration and defense. The first yrs are the hardest and have the most drop-outs. The pure research yrs were fine. Like having a "real" job. The hours are long throughout your graduate career and there are no summers off. It is a full-time committment.

And yes, you can call me DOCTOR! 😉

Suggestions? Sure... proceed as planned through the MBA level, and ditch the doctoral level dreams. With a background of a CS undergrad degree, combined with a good B-school MBA degree, you'll be a lock for a CIO position at a major corporation in relatively short order. And "kphomie, CIO for MegaCorporation, Inc." sounds a helluva lot better than "kphomie, Doctor of animal psychology" or some similar liberal arts bogus degree.

I hope your primary motivation isn't just to flaunt it in front of your peers. In fact if you even give a damn about more than a couple of people in your class 10 years after highschool it will be the first time in history.

Getting a PHd isn't gonna be fun, but it will be a lot of work. If you're a 90's student now in highschool don't expect to maintain that average in university unless you're very smart & a very hard worker. University is a wake up to a lot of people coming out of highschool.

Don't wanna put down a PHd too much but work hard throughout first year to keep your GPA strong and then rethink the entire PHd idea because then you'll really know what you're getting yourself into.

/agree skoorb is dead on about everything. Don't even think about that phd right now because college will change your mind so fast... This is my first year at college and dang its harder than high school by a long shot. And seriously do have a problem with the popular kids or something like did they try to flush you down the toilet because why would you even consider flaunting your degree I HATE those types of people :|

I am currently writing up my Ph.D. thesis (and have been for some time...).

I would only suggest you go for your Ph.D. if you find a line of study that fascinates you. To do it and do it well, you should really love what you are doing because you have to make alot of sacrifices along the way. In many cases family suffers, you give up much of your free time, and you live dirt poor both during and sometimes beyond the Ph.D. years.

One last thing - if you just want to do it to impress your friends at a highschool reunion maybe you could simply rent yourself a hot hooker (I beleive they prefer "sex trade workers&quot😉, say that she is your wife, and then share her with your friends. They will be much more impressed by this and it will be cheaper than getting a Ph.D... 😉
