Anybody here geocache?

I just learned about this today and it seems really cool- my brothers and I are going to get into it this summer. Anybody done it before, or have reccomendations on what GPS unit to get? The Garmin Etrex is popular.

I was just reading this page detailing a cache hidden in my town, at Swifty's Place (a large wooden construction about the size of a half city block which serves as a playground with lots of passages and bridges, neat things for kids, also has a "telephone" system built into it). I've never even heard of this before, and I guess I still don't understand what it is exactly (geocaching).

I just picked up the Garmin Etrex Legend C this Winter. So far it's been absolutely amazing. I love my Garmin and reccomend them to everyone. Here's mine: link.

I haven't tried Geocaching yet, but it sounds intriguing.

From what I understand, somebody goes and hides some sort of knicknack, and then posts the coordinates on geocaching. The idea is then that someone will go find it. It's like a treasure hunt, but not necessarily for something valuable, just for fun.

However, I'm just trying to regurgitate what I remember hearing, I've never really looked in to it myself.

Oooh, cool. I was reading another page about one hidden by the boat launch of a local lake that I like to take pictures at... neat, I may have to buy a GPS now Do you think most of them could be found without a GPS or is it crucial?

I was almost interested in it until I read the FAQ

Use your common sense in most cases. Explosives, ammo, knives, drugs, and alcohol shouldn't be placed in a cache. Respect the local laws. All ages of people hide and seek caches, so use some thought before placing an item into a cache.

Maybe there's a scuba diver team.

I wouldn't be surprised if one day there is a cache on some offshore buoys.

The water depth at our current location is showing only 741 feet.

I do it - I've got an eTrex Legend. Its pretty fun. I think the best part is in the summer, you get to be outside all day and find little-known parks and places in your area that you never knew existed. My fiancee got me into it....now i just need to catch up to how many she's found!

lmao! I've been intending to get into it (if I get the father's day gift I want)
And, if so, I intended to cache a "prize" in about 15 feet of water - hole in rock at bottom of lake I've snorkeled in.
